Dearest Ann, 

Our  deepest condolences on the loss of Douglas.  He was a gentle, caring person and we always picture him with a smile. A beautiful person inside and out.  We were so blessed that you brought him into the family. 

I know that Mummy would also be sending her love and hugs. She was very fond of Douglas, as we all were.

Uncle Dougie came into my life when I dated and later married his niece Karen.  It was to become a 37 year friendship which I can only treasure
Dougie came to live in St  Lucia in the early 1990's as the head of the government Planning & Architectural Department and quickly introduced a level of professionalism and work ethic his peers and staff to this day remember
While here he designed and built the Castries market ( which this week the government opened an extension complementing his original design), the Customs excise building,  two private homes ( I know of ) and finished the preliminary design of  a hotel for the east coast 
I worked and lived in Vieux Fort that time and   Dougie  in his usual giving and selfless manner designed and supervised the renovation of our new home in Castries. 
Dougie arrived in St Lucia as Karen's uncle but very quickly became Uncle Douglas to the entire Beaubrun family
We were all touched by his love, compassion,  selfless demeanor,  loyalty to family,  and sympathetic ear. 
Dougie was the quintessential family man
His visited us a few weeks before he passed and even then his concern was not his prognosis but  insuring  he wasnt   inconveniencing anyone
There were many blessings in his long life and non more than wife Ann
We  miss him and will treasure the memories

He cherished his wife, children, and other family members. A loyal friend.

My depest condolences to the family of a most beautiful man, Douglas Macfarlane. He was a man I admired so much, he had a lovely wife Ann..beautiful children and step son. May he rest in eternal peace

Uncle Dougie. my Canadian Uncle, as I often referred to you. I will so dearly miss you. Hanging out at cricket, liming and playing cards and tasting your cooking. 
Your heartwarming smile, the way those grey eyes lit up when around family, that familiar but unusual laugh that was unmistakably yours, the saga-boy walk, I admired your love and commitment to Ann and Michelle, Monique Kirk and your grand children. You were a unique person.
Even though we were not close as I grew up in TT, I felt a kinship to you as I became a young man living  in Miami. You provided a place of of wisdom and reflection for me You always saw the better side of things and for this I will always love and miss you.

Today, we celebrate the life of Douglas who passed away on May 13th in Winnipeg.  Ann and I met a few years ago and continued our friendship over the years, even from Winnipeg.  I do not know Doug very well, but he was a gentle soul with a wonderful sense of humour.   I was happy Ann and Doug spent 2 weeks with me on their way home to Winnipeg from St. Lucia, in March.  
The photo was taken last September 2019 in Stratford, Ontario on one of our outings while they were visiting.
May you forever rest in eternal peace dear Doug, with the angels.

The Tunapuna family of that bygone era have dispersed, and are now fading away one by one. The McFarlanes were one of the best, not least among them, Dougie. May his soul Rest In Peace. 

Doug, it is sad that you have to leave Anne and your friends. However, that is God's plan .
I have known Anne and yourself for the past 20 yrs, with you becoming quite fond of my daughter Lorena, when she painted your house.
We were fortunate to have met you at Joans' ;unknown to us  that it would have been our last visit. You will be missed.
May you rest in eternal peace, until we meet again.🙏

My memories of Uncle Douglas are tied up with places he lived, and a single activity: playing cards: All Fours, specifically. 

We stayed with him in Ottawa in 1970, when assorted Macfarlane descendants gathered in Toronto for the wedding of Richard and Thayne de Lima. In the 1980s, when he set up an architectural practice in Trinidad, we visited his office in Newtown, on occasion, and played cards at his apartment in Westmoorings. I stayed with him and Ann in Oakville, when I visited Canada for a feminist book fair in 1988. In the early nineties, he entertained a group of nieces and nephews on a long-weekend getaway, at his home in Rodney Bay, St Lucia. 

He kept an immaculate home, was debonair and very soft-spoken, with a temper that surprised and belied those dulcet tones. He loved his family and loved to play cards with family and close friends. Every one of those places – except Ottawa - I was too young - involved memorable card games. 

Yolanda Simon recalls that whenever we partnered with him and Albert Marquez to play All Fours, Douglas would spell out Ann’s name with the matchsticks that represented winning points. The last thing he said when we spoke on April 5 was, “I’m looking forward to hanging your Jack” (a winning play in All Fours). 

Until we meet again Uncle Douglas, know that we loved you.


Doug, you will be missed. 
I am so thankful to have met you through Ann and can’t believe that was 20 years ago. 
Such a handsome  and caring Gentleman... I loved listening to his stories of years past. From his Young days in Trinidad, his studies in England, his work as an Architect in Canada and St Lucia.  I will never forget Doug coming to sit with my husband, alsoDoug, when he was ill. 
I am so happy I had the opportunity to see Ann and Doug in March 2020, in Oakville, on their way home from St. Lucia.. as well as speaking with him about three weeks ago... 
He told me what he liked about me, with Ann by his side hugging him. 
He said how much he and Ann loved each other. He also said he cried when he had the opportunity to talk with Friends who called. 
God be with you, Gentleman, Doug.

What a gentleman, a kind human being and a wonderful friend! I remember uncle Douglas as a loyal friend to my Dad (Albert Marquez) both from an era that is hard to replicate nowadays. Men of substance and strength, with both a gentle and a caring spirit that the world could do with A lot more of. I can see him now impeccably dressed, As I hear his soft voice and remember his warm smile. May the Lord receive him with open arms and bless his soul! May he RIP!

For Owen you were always a 'nice guy' and ahead of him at St. Mary's College. But you caught up with each other later on. 
For me, you were part of our extended Tunapuna family... 
and a handsome chap with those smokey grey eyes!

My Dear Uncle Dougie, You were a kind and gentle soul that always truly cared about how we were doing or about anything we had to say, you  gave us your full attention. When you were around my children you would get down on your hands and knees and play with them. My only regret is that I didn’t get to hear more stories about you. Reading all these memories, it sounds like you had a remarkable life. You will truly be missed, however, I’m glad you are no longer in pain. Rest In Peace. Love from the Lee-Vernon Family. 

Doug MacFarlane has been a wonderful Brother In Law. He was as sincere and as warm as a person could be. Soft spoken, Doug was a great Story Teller of factual events in his long and remarkable life. Doug, I will miss you very much. God Will Bless You. 

We remember fondly Uncle Douglas’ visit with us when we took him and Ann to Isla Mirada. He was a kind and gentle spirit, humble but fun loving with a great sense of humor.   We remember Ann giving him hot water to drink. We were so proud of his accomplishments in architecture and the input he provided when we were redoing our kitchen. Uncle Douglas, we know you are watching down from heaven. Give all your sisters a hug for us, especially Granny Margaret. We love you. 

Katherine & Myself both knew Douglas from Trinidad ,but got to know himself & Ann much better when he took up a position with the Ministry of Planning  in Saint Lucia.where we now reside.
We can recall many happy memorizes  we shared  with them & are proud to have had them as friends  .

It has been sixty years since I left the land of my birth of whichI still cherish fond memories of my family and friends.
There are moments in life when you miss someone so much that you just want to pick them up from your mind and hug them.
Douglas,my big brother,
I thought of you with love today but that is nothing new.
I thought about you yesterday and the days before that too.
I think of you in silence and all the memories is my keepsake with which I will never part,your love for cricket,wstern movies,playing cards,french wine etc.
My family in France hold you close to our hearts and there you will remain.We particularly remember your presence at the celebration of our 50th Wedding Anniversary in Fouras,France.
Your life was a blessing your memory a treasure, you are loved beyond words and missed beyond measure.
Death takes the body.
God takes the soul whom you had a great faith.
Our minds holds the memories in our hearts.
God has you in His keeping.
Our sincerest condolences to his wife Elizabeth Ann, whom we share our meeting with in St.Lucia recently and his entire family.

We have lost a true treasure in Douggie. Our lives intersected in many ways in many countries -Trinidad, Toronto, London, Barbados, St Lucia and Florida. Even before I had met him, he babysat for my brother in London in the 1960s. But it was in St. Lucia that we spent the most time in his and Ann’s company. A gourmet chef, he was famous for his fish dishes - Saturday afternoon fish broth, Sunday morning buljol, weeknight chowder, and the more formal Chinese style steamed fish. Douggie presided over these meals with an endearing smile and a gentle humour, that could turn, in a good natured way, into a serious “fatigue.”
But it is not only for his cooking that we remember him so fondly. He was full of thoughtful surprises. One of these was his habit of leaving gifts on our doorstep. We watched his characteristic gait as he quietly disappeared down our walkway after leaving fresh bread on our doorstep. On an ordinary evening during the week a sudden phone call would invite us to join Ann and himself to watch the sunset on the Reduit beach with some glasses of wine.
Douggie was a true artist, not just professionally with his architecture (he designed the Castries market in St Lucia), but in his private life with his paintings and garden creations, which were the envy of my wife, Sandra.
We will always regret having just missed seeing him and Ann by a few days in St Lucia last Christmas.
Sandra and I will always treasure his memory.

In 1981 I was secretary in Mr. Douglas Macfarlane's Architectural Company alongside, his wife Ann who was the Manager and, ThomasMcCartney ,Shelford Sammy and , his brother Theodore Macfarlane. HE WILL STAY IN PEACE AS HIS ANCESTORS WELCOME HIM. I do hope that we will meet again. ANN STAY GOOD.

Dear Uncle Douglas - we are thinking of you with much love and fondness. You were always so gentle, loving and caring with your little sister, Margaret, my mother. She loved you dearly. You were a role model to many of us in our family - your accomplishments despite adversity, your willingness to help others, and your ability to disarm with your smile. I remember when my sons met you for the first time - this great uncle - you made such a wonderful impression on them.  Ann, we hold you in our embrace. Gary, Michelle, Monique, Kirk - you are all in our thoughts. Much love and peace. You are with your beloved sisters now.  

In 1981 Douglas MacFarlane sent a young employee with very little training. no experience and a raw design idea to meet with one of the most senior structural design engineers at that time and ignited in that young man, a confidence in them both that has never been extinguished to this day.
I will continue to celebrate the memory of his life and be thankful for the part he played in mine.

Uncle Douglas became our  "uncle" when my brother Christopher dated and then married his niece Karen. Little did we know how much he would impact the lives of so many of us in my family.
He was a kind and loving person and lovely to be around. 
It was with great happiness that we were able to spend time with him and Ann in St. Lucia recently. 
What a wonderful time we had and so much joy to be able to hug him and kiss him and let him know how important he was to us.
He kept saying what a wonderful wife he has and that is his tribute to Ann.

Doug.  In the tears I knew you, it was always a joy to be in your company. My sincere condolences to Ann as she grieves the loss of a wonderful husband.  Doug is in His Father's home. Ann I am praying for strength for you. With love. 

My fondest memory of Douglas was his kindness and gentle laugh. I arrived in St.Lucia to lead British Airways’ operation and after a few months decided that the BA house was too big for me. I moved to the development where Anne and Douglas lived. Douglas knew that the road between Castries and Vieux Fort Airport was a treacherous one, so three times per week, he would wait up to hear the alarm of my car signalling that I had returned home from work safely. Sometimes this would be well after midnight. Then and only then he would turn off the lights in his home which was across the pool from
my own.  When my disabled dad and my niece visited , bulljol was a feature on his menu for sure. Later I came to know that we knew many of the same people. They introduced me to Kathy Battoo who has become a lifelong friend. 
Rest well Douglas. Anne... I sending my prayers and love. 

One of the first memories of Uncle Doug that stays with me was when our families were living in Trinidad and we planned a trip together -either to Curacao or Tobago (forgot which one). I remember preparing to pack with my mother and Uncle Doug came into the room and asked my mother what she was preparing for the children to eat. When she said that she hadn't prepared anything as yet, he came into the room about 15 minutes later saying that he had prepared food for the children. I remember thinking about how kind and conscientious he was. I also remember visiting his family home near Ottawa when I was a kid and watching the "Six Million Dollar Man" with his children. He always seemed gentle and kind to me and I only have great memories of him. He had gentle grey eyes and a gentle manner about him. 

Rest in peace our lovely Uncle Doug. Though years have passed since I've seen you, I will cherish those memories of my childhood with you ever present. We will surely miss your charm and smile. Love you always.

Douglas was my mother's favourite sibling.  She said so many times,he gave away at her wedding. SO when she was ill he was present and attentive. This was in St Lucia. He would fix her breakfast always with a flower, a sketch something unique. He taught me that I could add bits of apple to my buljol,his was delcious.  A Geminii forever. 'Though Death be poor it ends a mortal woe.' Goodbye Uncle Douglas.

I have lost a very dear and special person whose friendship I was fortunate to enjoy for more than seventy years. A truly sincere and loyal friend indeed with whom   I shared so many memorable times.
Rest in eternal peace my friend in the welcoming arms of your Lord in whom you had the greatest faith and trust.
