Roy Lee McDonald passed away on May 2, 2022. Born in Monterey, Tenn., he was one of 11 children born to the late Maurice and Beulah Ledbetter McDonald. He was preceded in death by his wife of nearly 70 years, Mildred Harbison McDonald, and by his brothers Alden, Charles, James, and Tom, and by his sisters, Mary Frances Luck, Noel Merritt, Dimple Miller, and Deanne Burrum.
He is survived by sons Shannon (Beth), and Ross; daughters Ann Lusk (Steve), Margaret Pond (Neil), and Ellen Yandell (Dellson), by his grandchildren, Sarah Lusk (John Moore), William Lusk, and Addison Pond (Caylee), by his sister Anna Rose Warren, and by his brother Willie McDonald. He was loved by his numerous McDonald nieces and nephews.
Roy was a dedicated member of Hillwood Presbyterian Church since1960, singing in the choir for 40 years, and serving as a deacon, elder, trustee, and Sunday School Superintendent. He was an elder and Clerk of the Session for 25 years.
Roy attended Eakin Elementary, Cavert Jr. High, and West End High Schools in Nashville, graduating from West in 1948. During his years at West he was junior class president and played three sports. He was active in the West High Lunch Bunch and reunion committees.
He had a great love of baseball and was elected to the Gilbert League All Start Team for three consecutive years. He spent 21 years as a college baseball umpire and officiated at three NCAA Regional Tournaments. He served as President and Treasurer of the Nashville Old Timers Baseball Association, and was the first umpire elected to the Old Timers Hall of Fame. Mildred shared his love of baseball, traveling with him to ten World Series.
Roy had a successful 38-year-long banking career and worked most of that time at the former Commerce Union Bank at Third and Broadway, where he built many relationships with his loyal customers. He retired from NationsBank as Vice President in 1992. He also served as President and Treasurer of the West End Sertoma Club.
His family would like to thank Roy's close and devoted friends for their friendship: Steve Bloch, Larry Schmittou, Mark Anderson, and John Reynolds. A sincere thank you to the staffs of both Belmont Village and Caris Hospice for the care for our father.
Roy was a devoted husband who dedicated many years caring for the love of his life, his wife Mildred.
A memorial service will be held at Hillwood Presbyterian Church Saturday, June 4, 2022, at 2:00 p.m. with a visitation prior from 12:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. A private burial will take place at Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hillwood Presbyterian Church.
