nurse, Meryl was born March 26, 1947 at Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee. He was
immersed in the Christain Community that would be his lifelong support his entire life.
First and foremost, Meryl was a follower of Christ. He was a husband, father, grandfather, son
and uncle; all of these things made him a blessing to those who knew him. He married Barbara
Thompson on November 10, 1990 in a ceremony before family and friends in Nashville 31 years
ago.
Meryl is the father of two children, Meryl (Mack) Allen Hodge and Ryan-Leigh Raney
Jennings. He loved his wife and children deeply and loved the time he could spend with them.
For 33 years, Meryl served in the Air National Guard as a Medic. His service to God and
Country is simply another display of his servitude, kindness and love for all. Meryl spent his
life’s career in service to his community. He was a Medic, aided in opening a Drug & Alcohol
Treatment Center in Hohenwald, and a Realtor. He was a member of the Brentwood
ToastMasters and devoted time to the Prison Ministry Program through the Brentwood Hills
Church of Christ. He was currently a member of the Victory Seventh Day Adventist
Congregation in Old Hickory Tennessee, where he and Barbara made many close friends.
On the 1st day of April, 2022, Meryl went to sleep in Jesus and left this earth from complications
due to COVID.
Meryl is survived by his wife, Barbara Thompson Hodge, two children, Meryl (Mack) Allen
Hodge and Ryan-Leigh Raney (Kevin) Jennings; 1 step daughter, April (Mark) Cantrell, a sister,
Carolyn Schrader, three Granddaughters, Laura Hamilton, TaLisa Cantrell and Acheena
Cantrell. Several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. Meryl was preceded in
death by his parents Meryl E Hodge Sr.,Dora Mae Davis Hodge, and a sister, Joan Wright.
Funeral Services will be conducted in Woodlawn’s Dignity Hall. Burial will follow in Woodlawn
Memorial Park, near other family members. Serving as Active Pallbearers, are nephews, Jon
Julian, David Schrader and Pat Hardie; Brother-in-Laws, Tony Skaggs and Fred Ziegler; and
Step Son-in-Law, Mark Cantrell. Honorary Pallbearers, Tom Wright, Bernard DeVasher, Steve
Varro, Bob Strickland and Randy Barnes.
Visitation will be Thursday, April 7th from 11:00 -12:30 with the Funeral Service beginning at 1:00 p.m. at the Woodlawn-Roesch-Patton Funeral Home, 660 Thompson Lane, Nashville, TN 37204, 615-383-4754.
