She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Togue Uchida, sister Jean Peckham, sisters-in-law Monie and Jan Ross, and brother-in-law James Nilles. Mary is also survived by her five children, Karen (Bob) Beyer, Paul David II, Ross (Cathy), Missy, and Tom (Debbie) Uchida; grandchildren: Eric Furman, Emily (Jimmy) Hurley, Alex, Stephanie and Kaitlin Uchida, Reese Sanders, Kori, Samantha and Cameron Uchida and great-grandsons: Jason McCoy and Tristin Hurley.
She is preceded by siblings Roman, Joseph, Gerald and Earl “Shorty” Ross and Ruth Nilles.
Mary attended the University of Wisconsin at Madison. She married Togue Uchida on December 27, 1947 and they moved to Nashville where she helped Togue in the photography business, which eventually led to the family business, Uchida Photography, still vital today. Mary was an arts enthusiast; she danced and taught with the Nashville Ballet Society and performed in musical theatre for many years. Volunteer work was a big part of her life; she worked with St. Henry Church and School, Edgehill UMC, The Ladies of Charity, St. Thomas Hospital, Clover Bottom Development Center, and the Prison Visitation Program.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, October 2, 2015 in the St. Henry Chapel, 6401 Harding Rd., Nashville, officiated by Father Joseph Patrick Breen. A reception and visitation with the family will follow from 12:00 noon to 2:00 p.m. in the Parish Center Meeting Room.
