MCGONAGLE, John J. - Age 89 of Nashville, Tennessee passed away peacefully June 30, 2011 under the care of Alive Hospice, St. Thomas. He is preceded in death by his wife, Olga McGonagle. Survived by his sons, John J. McGonagle (Tamara) and Jim McGonagle (Terri Brinegar); daughter, Kathleen Narrigan (Jim); grandchildren, Michael Narrigan, Cameron Narrigan, Sean Narrigan, Jake McGonagle and Samantha McGonagle. Born in Boston, MA, Mr. McGonagle was a sophomore at Boston College when World War II began. He enlisted in the US Army Air Corp as an Aviation Cadet. 1st Lt. McGonagle was later assigned to the 319th Bomb Group 440th Squadron in Sardinia, Italy. His B-26 Martin Maurader and his crew of six were shot down over Mantua, Italy and he was interned as a P.O.W. until liberated by the Russians. He received the Purple Heart and the Air Medal. After the war was over, he returned to Boston College and completed the final two years. The next 40 years were spent in sales, selling Portland Cement to the construction industry. In 1974, the Marquette Cement Company relocated the company's headquarters to Nashville. He retired as V.P. of Sales in 1984. During retirement he served 15,000 hours as a volunteer at St. Thomas Hospital. Mr. McGonagle was a member of the WWII Bomber group of Middle TN, Hillwood Country Club, and past President of the Nashville Seniors Golf Association. Mass of Resurrection will be conducted at 10 am on Thursday, July 7, 2011 at the Cathedral of Incarnation with Rev. Peter Do Quang Chau serving as celebrant. Visitation will be from 3-7pm on Wednesday, July 6, at Marshall-Donnelly-Combs. Honorary pallbearers will be the WWII Bomber group of Middle TN and the American Legion Post 5. Interment will be at Arlington Memorial Cemetery with full military honors. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Greater Nashville Affiliate of Susan G.
