Jerry Edwin Hertenstein, Sr., age 78, departed this life on October 26, 2020 in Nashville, Tennessee. Jerry was born on December 24, 1941 in Chicago, Illinois to the late Ithial Gustav Hertenstein and Hazel McNew Hertenstein. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Sybil Gean Hertenstein; brothers, Robert Hertenstein and Neal Bledsoe and sister, Donna Hertenstein Hammond.
He is survived by his son, Jerry Jr. (Eve); daughters, Nancy (David) Burton and Pamela (Michael) Gillen; grandchildren, Joshua Burton (Kristen), Emily Julian (Matthew), Daniel Burton, Trevor Gillen, Jessica Gillen, James Hertenstein and Rachel Hertenstein; two great-grandchildren, Sawyer and Carter and sister, Beverly Ciangi. Jerry is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.
Jerry was always telling jokes to make people smile and lift their spirits. Jerry retired after over 39 years in Management of Consolidated Freightways. He held numerous positions and was a honorary Certified Claims Professional in Transportation.
Jerry was a 56 year member of the Masonic Lodge, 55 years as a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite and Al Menah Shrine Temple member, where he belonged to the John B. Garrett Lodge 711.
He attended Judson Baptist Church and was a devoted, die hard fan of the Chicago Cubs, Chicago Bears and the Chicago Blackhawks.
A Gathering of Family and Friends will be held from five o'clock until seven in the evening, with a short Masonic Service to be held at seven o'clock on Friday, October 30, 2020 at Mount Olivet Funeral Home.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at two o'clock Saturday, October 31, 2020 with a Gathering of Family and Friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in Mount Olivet Cemetery.
