He was preceded in death by his father Lillard P. Swain, mother Effie Harrell Swain
his wife Ethel Hall Swain, Sisters Pearl (Herbert) Batey, Rachel (Ward) Wright,
brother Frank (Beulah) Swain. Survived by his son James W Swain of Ft. Lauderdale, FL
and several nieces and nephews and his dear friend Lori Rucker. Educated in
Rutherford County Schools at Jefferson Elementary where he was awarded the 4 square gold
medal and Smyrna High School where he was a member of the Beta Club. He played football
and basketball and was the President of his Junior and Senior Class. He was a graduate of the U.S.
Air Force school of Meteorology, the American Institute of Banking and the Stonier Graduate
School of Banking at Rutgers University in NJ. He was a WW II veteran serving as a meteorologist
with the 8th Air Force in the European Theater (1942-1945) and was on the way to the Pacific
Theater when the war ended. After 40 years of service with the Commerce Union Bank (Bank
of America) he retired as Vice President. He was active in many civic, religious and business organizations included being the Former President of the American Institute of Banking, Nashville
Branch, Director of the Downtown Civitan Club and former President of Nashville Association of
Credit Management, former President of Brentwood Country Club and was former President of
Nashville Boosters Club. He was a member of the Second Presbyterian Church where he served as
chairman of the board of deacons and as Treasurer. Was active in the Junior Chamber of Commerce
where he served as one of the organizers of the Clinic Bowl and later in the Nashville Area Chamber
of Commerce. He was also a member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
His hobbies were golf and traveling. Graveside services to be held Thur. March 22 at 4 pm at
Woodlawn Memorial Park.
