Jay (J.T. or Papa) was born on January 24, 1930 in Hohenwald, TN, the son of Claude H. Sharp and Myrtle E. Duncan Sharp. He married Naomi Craighead on June 18th, 1960 in Nashville, TN and she precedes him in death.
Also preceding him in death are his parents; brothers, Glenn Sharp, Owen Sharp, and Claude Sharp; and sisters, Audrey Weatherly and Faye Mangrum.
Surviving is one daughter, Sandra (Alan) Hood of Nashville; step-son, Gerald (Kathy) Witcher of Nashville; grandchildren, Haley Hood of Little Rock, AR, Hannah Hood of Nashville, Heather (Mike) Geren of Murfreesboro, and Clint Witcher of Murfreesboro; and great-grandchildren, Yates Geren, Anna Clark Geren, and Will Abraham.
Jay was a proud veteran of the United States Army. After his time with the army, he went on to work for Avco / Textron Aeronautics Corporation where he spent all of his working career before retiring.
A loving, kind, and gentle man, Jay enjoyed spending time with his family. He was a loving husband to Naomi for 57 years. He loved his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He loved attending their sporting and school events over the years. He had a real talent for fixing anything. He loved to piddle and tinker, and was a very hard worker. He was known for always being prompt and on time no matter what, and he never missed his weekly Bingo with friends at McDonald’s. You could often find him working in the yard, gardening, or in his younger days at the lake fishing. Jay had a green thumb which unfortunately did not get passed to his children. His favorite attire always included a ball cap. He was a big sports fan and as much as his daughter tried, he continued to root for Vanderbilt. He also was a Braves and Titans fan.
Jay will be greatly missed.
Services for Jay will be private for the immediate family due to Coronavirus concerns on Monday, July 6, 2020. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to Lipscomb University College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences or Middle Tennessee Christian School.
