Mr. Homer Boyd Gibbs, Jr., died peacefully at home on July 8, 2020, in Nashville, TN. He was the son of the late Homer Boyd Gibbs and the late Norma Wright Gibbs. He was born on March 30, 1932, and lived almost all of his life in Nashville. Homer attended Montgomery Bell Academy and graduated from Vanderbilt University in 1954 where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity. Upon graduating from Vanderbilt, he received a commission in the U.S. Army, serving until 1956. He was in the Army Reserve until 1963 when he was discharged as a Captain. For 56 years, Homer was happily married to Barry Bennett Gibbs who passed away in 2012. They started their married life in Houston, Texas, before moving back to Nashville in 1960. He began his mortgage banking career in 1956 with the T.J. Bettes Company in Houston. Upon returning to Nashville with Barry, Homer worked with Guaranty Mortgage before he and his father founded a family business, Gibbs & Company, specializing in the financing of income producing properties. Homer was President of the Nashville and Tennessee Mortgage Bankers Associations. He was a member of the American Institute of Real Estate Appraisers, holding the M.A.I. designation. Homer supported many civic and non-profit organizations through volunteer service. He was active in the leadership of The Nashville YMCA, serving as President and also President of the Nashville YMCA Foundation. He received a number of awards from the Y including the Order of the Red Triangle. He was President of the Exchange Club of Nashville and the Nashville City Club. Homer served on the Board of Directors of Cheekwood Estate and Gardens for many years and was named Honorary Life Member. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. Homer found great pleasure traveling with Barry, family and friends, and especially in time spent in Sea Island, Georgia, visiting for more than 50 years. He was a member of the Belle Meade Country Club, the Ocean Forest Golf Club, and the Sea Island Club. In addition to many friends and extended family, he was beloved by his son, Boyd Gibbs (Joycelyn) and his daughters Becky Davidson (Paul) and Louisa Basarrate (Armando); grandchildren, Andrew Gibbs, the late Jake Gibbs, Bennett Davidson (Vy), Katie Davidson, Matthew Davidson, and Sophie Basarrate; his sister, Linda M. Gibbs, and nephew Todd Belveal and niece Shannon Reid (Colin). The family is grateful for the care of the staff of Caregivers by Whole Care and Amedisys Hospice. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Cheekwood, Montgomery Bell Academy, the YMCA of Middle Tennessee, or the charity of your choice. Private burial will be at Woodlawn Cemetery with Homer’s children and grandchildren.
