Charles Nolen Shockley passed away on January 17, 2018 at age 91. He was preceded in death by the love of his life, best friend, and wife of 63 years, Betty Miles Shockley. Charley was the epitome of a gentleman, possessing a dry wit and a kind and loving heart. Charley was the son of the late Kathryn Nolen Shockley of Nashville and the late Thomas Jefferson Shockley of Columbia, TN. His brother was the late Andrew Goff Shockley of Knoxville. He is survived by his sister Mary Porter Field of Nashville.
Charley is survived by his son, Charles (Chuck) Shockley and wife Susan of Franklin, and daughter Sara (Sally) Shockley Thompson and husband David of Atlanta, and by grandchildren Will Shockley and Claire Shockley of Franklin, and Robert Thompson and Daniel Thompson of Atlanta.
Charley was born in Columbia, TN and was a proud graduate of Columbia Military Academy. Upon graduation he enlisted in the United States Army and served in the 82nd Airborne Division during World War II. He rose to the rank of First Lieutenant and earned the Bronze Star. Charley then attended Vanderbilt University where he was a devoted, lifelong Commodore. After completing his degree he worked for Kusan Inc., often representing the company in New York and the countries of Central America. Charley and Betty were longtime members of Second Presbyterian Church and later joined Calvary Methodist. Charley enjoyed sports, dogs, and especially the company of his family.
The family wishes to express a deep and eternal gratitude to the amazing caregivers. We were blessed to know Anita May, Sandra Binkley, Lori Warren and Ruby Windom. These women always demonstrated devotion, love, and compassion for both Betty and Charley. We cannot thank them enough.
Visitation is scheduled for 11:00 am on January 24 at Calvary United Methodist Church with services to follow at 12:00 noon. Interment will follow at Middle Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers the family recommends memorial gifts to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, The Humane Society of the United States, or the charity of your choice.
