Carl William Shoub of Nashville, TN, age 94, passed away June 21, 2017. From WW II's Battle of the Bulge to the Edge-O-Lake Tomato Man, Carl was a friend to all and a part of Nashville history. As the display man for Harvey's Department Store, each Christmas he set up Nashville’s beloved Nativity Scene at Centennial Park creating wonderful memories for all. Born in Wellsville, Ohio, Carl as a young man worked in the steel mills of Gary, Indiana. He and all 3 of his brothers served our nation in WW II. In the Army, Carl saw action in major battles in France and Germany, including helping to free over 250,000 POW’s including Germany’s largest POW camp in Moosberg. For a time he was also an Army cook with a reputation for making first class donuts. During his early training at Camp Campbell, he met at the Nashville USO a Tennessee beauty, Anne Givan, who became the love of his life. After the war, they married in Nashville and raised their daughters here. They celebrated 71 years of marriage. After many years at Harvey's, Carl worked successfully as a route wholesale appliance salesman and as a factory worker at Bridgestone. In recent years Carl was best known as the tomato man to all his friends and buddies at his nearby McDonald’s. He kept everyone supplied all summer from his garden and also helped neighborhood kids fix their bicycles. Carl is survived by his wife, Anne Givan Shoub; two daughters and their husbands, Carol Anne Brock (Jim) of Coral Gables, FL, and Janet Dee Martin (Tom) of Nashville; and a beloved grandson, Christopher Noll, Nashville. A sister-in-law Carol Shoub, and nieces and nephews also survive.
