Alden Hitchcock Smith, Jr., age 84, died on February 25, 2016. He was born on February 21, 1932 to Elizabeth Dibrell Smith and Alden Hitchcock Smith, Sr. He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Gayle Elam Smith and his brother, George Dibrell Smith, Sr. He is survived by his three daughters: Dibbie Martin (Mickey), Dell Mitchell (Thom) and Gayle Ferguson (Bill) and six grandchildren: Sara Martin, Ross Martin, Drew Martin, Meg Mitchell, Katherine Ferguson and Alden Ferguson. He is also survived by his brother E. Dan Smith (Sue), sister-in-law Mary Virginia Smith Williams, brother-in-law Wade Elam (Jane) and many nieces and nephews.
Mr. Smith attended Parmer School, Montgomery Bell Academy and graduated from The Webb School and Vanderbilt University. At Vanderbilt, he was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity, Omicron Delta Kappa National Leadership Honor Society and the Vanderbilt Track team. From there, he served in the Navy as a LT(JG) on the USS Monrovia. Returning to Nashville he joined his father at Smith, Reed and Thompson as a Certified Life Underwriter and Charter Financial Consultant. Mr. Smith received his Masters in Business Administration at The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and later earned his law degree from Vanderbilt University School of Law. He began his lifelong law career in the Trust Department of Third National Bank. After retiring from SunTrust Bank, he entered private practice and continued to help many families with their estate planning. He was active in First Presbyterian Church, Belle Meade Country Club, Leadership Nashville, the Tennessee Bar Association and the Rotary Club of Nashville.
Alden enjoyed hiking, fishing, playing golf and traveling with his friends. Trips to Beaver Creek, Colorado and Dubois, Wyoming were his highlights each year.
Pallbearers are Alden Ferguson, Drew Martin, Ross Martin, George Smith, Jr., Alden Smith II and E. Dan Smith III.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, February 28th from 12:30 to 2:30 in the Cheek House at First Presbyterian Church. Graveside services will follow at 3:00 at Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
