Born October 15,1924, in Marion County, Indiana, Helen was the daughter of Ralph and Nellie (Artis) Brown. Helen grew up outside Nashville and in later life lived in Belmont and Helmsburg. She attended local schools and graduated from Nashville High School in 1942. On Valentine’s Day 1942, she and Winford Ernest Moore became engaged, then married Friday the 13th of November the same year. They raised four children, Bev, Kay, Becky, and Ernie, and shared 30 years together before he passed away in October 1972.
Helen had an adventurer's spirit and enjoyed many travels with family and friends. She was a dedicated worker who ran the campground store at Brown County State Park for more than 20 years. Helen strongly supported Brown County Republicans, serving several years for the Precinct Committee. Helen received their Award for Dedication in 2009 in special recognition of her support. Additionally, she was awarded a Certificate of Appreciation from the Indiana Republican State Committee. Helen was a member of Cottonwood Church, the Brown County Historical Society, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies’ Auxiliary.
Helen’s large family will miss her humor and determination; she had a great laugh and loved to play. She inspired many to explore the world and embrace adventure as an independent woman. She leaves a beautiful legacy of making the most of life, both its hardships and gifts.
Anyone who knew Helen knew her for an honest, hard working woman who was sure of her faith and her place in the world. Her family firmly believes that their matriarch is at rest in Heaven with her Lord and Savior, joining the family and friends who went on ahead of her.
Helen is survived by her daughters Sharon Kay Shipley of Columbus, Indiana, and Dr. Becky Jane (Alan) Cox of Hollow Rock, Tennessee. Her surviving grandchildren are: Amy, Julie, Sara, Vernetta, Betsy, Glenn, Cami, Winford III, Justin, and Kennedy. Additionally, she is survived by nineteen great-grandchildren, twenty-three great-great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, and many friends, including honorary family member and care-giver Brenda Clark.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Win; her eldest daughter Beverly Jackson; her son Winford E. Moore II; two great-granddaughters, Whitney Jones and Chloe-Ann Ferree; and her sister Velma Wrightsman.
