Thomas “Coach Mac” MacDonald, 83 of Nashua, NH passed away peacefully on Monday, September 15, 2014 at his home with his loving family by his side. He was born June 25, 1931 in Medford, MA, son of the late Thomas M. and Catherine (Fitzgerald) MacDonald.
Mr. MacDonald spent his early childhood in Chelsea, MA and he was raised in Hull, MA. He attended Stonehill College, Bridgewater State University and earned his MBA from Boston College. Mr. MacDonald has been a resident of Nashua for the past 26 years and before that a 26 year resident of Braintree, MA. He served on the Braintree School Committee from 1970-1970. Mr. MacDonald was a Chief Contract Negotiator at Sanders and Associates in Nashua. He later taught ethics and social justice at Bishop Guertin High School, where they created the Tom MacDonald Award in his honor. In 1999 he was inducted into the Stonehill College Sport Hall of Fame. Many saw him as the Ambassador of Stonehill College football. He coached football and baseball at Stonehill College and Bishop Guertin High School. Mr. MacDonald was a communicant of Immaculate Conception in Nashua and a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was truly loved by all those who met him and will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his wife; Diane (Atkins) MacDonald of Nashua, seven children; Thomas J. MacDonald, Jr. and his wife Maribeth of Braintree, MA, Cathleen MacDonald of Quincy, MA, David F. MacDonald of Braintree, Michael P. MacDonald and his wife Bella of Weymouth, MA, Stephen A. MacDonald and his wife Michelle of Hanover, MA, Douglas S. MacDonald of Braintree and Patricia M. Kelly of Arlington, MA. He is also survived by five grandchildren; Emily, Callie, Audrey, Tommy and Jessica, a great-granddaughter; Lucy, a sister-in-law; Patricia McCulloch and her husband Basil of Medfield, MA and by Patricia MacDonald of Braintree, whom he was formerly married to. He was predeceased by a son-in-law; Joseph Kelly and by a stepson; Cliff Atkins.
Visiting hours will be held Thursday, September 18, 2014 from 4:00pm to 8:00pm in the Zis-Sweeney Funeral Home, 26 Kinsley St., Nashua. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00am Friday in Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 216 E. Dunstable Rd., Nashua. A reception will be held in the spiritual hall of Immaculate Conception Church following the funeral. Burial will be held 11:00am Saturday in Hull Village Cemetery, Hull, MA. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be directed to Harvest on Vine Food Pantry, 46 Winthrop St., Charlestown, MA 02129.
