For a youthful adventure, Tia and her friend Wyp decided to spend a year in the United States and improve their English. But, instead of moving home, Tia became a fashion model and married Bill – her husband of over 50 years.
Tia was one of the founders and a driving force behind the Open Air Theater at the Washington Crossing State Park. She also spent several Christmases serving hot cider to the troops and visitors who gathered for the reenactment of Washington Crossing the Delaware. Tia was an active member of the Dutch Koffie Club in Princeton and had many friends who were also Dutch expats. Tia and Bill raised four children in Lawrenceville, NJ. One of her genius parenting tricks was convincing her children that PB&J was a delicacy to be savored on vacation.
Tia and Bill retired full time to Naples after many years as snowbirds. In Naples, Tia enjoyed sunsets in Park Shore, alumni events, her book club, and her women’s club. Tia also thoroughly enjoyed hosting and visiting family and friends from all over the world.
Tia was preceded in death by her husband Bill and her siblings Ben, Henk, and Hillie.
Tia is survived by her sister Clari, her four children – Tim, Will (Leah), Elisabeth (Jason) and Gina (Don), as well as many grandchildren (and a great grandchild), nieces and nephews. A memorial service is planned for September 10, 2022 at 2:00 PM at Hodges Funeral Home at Naples Memorial Gardens, 525 111th Ave N, Naples, FL 34108.
