Johnny was born August 26, 1929 in Ft. Myers, FL to the late C.C. “Pat” Morgan Jr. and Mae Collier Morgan Regis. He was the great grandson of the late W.T. Collier, the first settler on Marco Island. Being a 4th generation Florida cracker, he spent his childhood fishing, cattle wrangling, exploring, and learning his lifelong passion of boat building. He built his first boat at the ripe ole age of 12 and he did not stop there. He worked as a crewman on boats and in his family’s boat yard, Daniels Bros Boatyard, until he became a captain himself. As a captain he spent many years guiding and as a private captain.
In the late 70’s, after years of traveling he decided to slow down a bit and started Morgan Boats. This is his biggest legacy, having built over 500 boats with most of them still on the water to this day. Anyone that met him would always remember his slow southern drawl that had a way to touch your heart and soul. He wasn’t a man of many words but when he spoke, you listened. Capt. Johnny has his name and pictures in books, magazines, museums, TV shows and even had a song written about him. The name of the song is ‘Whatever’s Fair’, which was his life motto and he truly lived it that way.
He will be deeply missed by those who knew him as being honest and hard working. He was a faithful follower of New Hope Ministries and his Pastor Grant Thigpen.
He is survived by his loving wife Rachel Sadler Morgan, whom he was married to for 58 years, sister Shirley Morgan Reaves, sons Paul (Nancy) Morgan, John “Boo” Morgan, Michael Morgan, along with 8 grandchildren and 12 great-grand children.
He was preceded in death by his daughter Sandra (Gary-living) Vanderpool and Robert (Francis-living) Morgan.
Our Captain is in Heaven now trading boat building secrets with Noah and in the loving and welcoming arms of Jesus. Tight lines and smooth seas, Capt!
