Ned was the loving husband of Carole Fiorine Barrett and the son of the late James Edward and Margaret Holland Barrett.
Ned was a proud alumni of the University of Lowell where he received his undergraduate degree in education. Ned chaired the School of Education Advisory Board and helped to maintain the Margaret Holland Barrett Teaching Scholarship, which Ned’s father had begun in honor of Ned’s mother who was a proud graduate of the Normal School and received her bachelor’s degree in education from the University. Ned delighted in telling people that he and his mother were in the same graduating class.
Ned also received a master’s degree in education at Salem State University and a master’s degree in business administration at Suffolk University.
After teaching in Massachusetts and California, Ned transformed his love of children and education into a passion for publishing educational materials. He held many positions in several different publishing companies retiring as a senior publishing executive of Pearson Education.
Ned loved the San Francisco Bay and boating on the Bay. He was a life member of the Golden Gate Yacht Club where he served as a flag officer and spent two years as Commodore. He enjoyed the thrill of the America’s Cup Races and cheering the team to victory on his beloved Bay.
Ned is survived by his wife Carole; his daughter Susan Barrett Weinswig and her husband Steven, and by his son Edward James Barrett, Jr. and his wife Vanessa. He is also survived by his five grandchildren whom he loved with all his heart: Edward III, Ben, Emma, Kathleen, and Grace. Ned was the middle child in his family and is survived by his older brothers James Barrett and Thomas Barrett and was predeceased by his younger siblings Ann Barrett Geary and Richard Barrett.
A Funeral Mass will be held in San Francisco where Ned will be interred, and a Mass will be held in Massachusetts to give family and friends on both coasts an opportunity to gather to celebrate Ned’s life.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Ned’s memory to the Margaret Holland Barrett Teaching Scholarship at the University of Massachusetts Lowell (see link below) or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
