Lloyd Gerald O’Brien was born on March 25, 1962, in Montreal, Quebec, to John (Jack) and Beatrice O’Brien. Lloyd passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loved ones on September 3rd, 2022, in Nanaimo, British Columbia.
He grew up in Dollard-des-Ormeaux, Quebec, and spent most summer holidays in Prince Edward Island before the family moved to Winnipeg, MB, where he completed his last two years of high school. Upon graduation, he attended University of Manitoba, graduating in 1985. After university, he moved to Calgary and became involved with standardbred racing, where he trained and owned horses, and made many lifelong friends. Eventually moving to Nanaimo, he met the love of his life, Sheri, whom he married in 1999, and they had two beautiful children, Brady and Sarah.
At the age of 40, Lloyd decided to go back to university and become a teacher. His passion for learning was contagious, he was an enthusiastic teacher who made learning exciting for students. He loved the students and his colleagues at Uplands Park Elementary school. Lloyd enjoyed playing sports, particularly hockey and baseball, spending time with his friends and making new ones everywhere he went. He had the unique ability to make everyone he met feel like they had been friends for years, to find the humour in every situation and was always the first to lend a hand or help someone out. He had a quick dry wit, was extremely charming, and always wore a smile.
Lloyd leaves behind his loving wife, Sheri, son Brady, and daughter Sarah. He was predeceased by his mother Beatrice, in 2019 and his father, Jack, who passed away peacefully on September 30th, 2022. He is left to mourn by his siblings Judy, Michael, Joe, Patrick, and Maureen. He also leaves behind his loving in-laws, Bill and Darlene Creighton, sister-in-law Jennifer, and several nieces and nephews. Aside from his family, Lloyd will be dearly missed by his extended hockey family and the many dear friends he made over the years, far too many to name.
Special thanks to the doctors, nurses and staff at Nanaimo Regional Hospital Chemotherapy Care Centre and Palliative Care Unit and our GP Dr. Dodo. There will be a drop in Celebration of Life at the Nanaimo Golf Course on November 13th from 1pm to 4pm. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that donations be made to a bursary which has been set up in Lloyd’s name to be given each year to a graduating grade 12 student who previously attended Uplands Park Elementary School. These donations can be made payable to Nanaimo Ladysmith Schools Foundation and collected at the Celebration of Life or mailed to 5079 Bullrush Place, Nanaimo, BC.
