Graham was born November 3, 1943, in Nottingham, UK to Jim & Pat Mace. In 1948, the Mace family immigrated to Canada and after some time, they settled in the Edmonton area. Graham, and his twin brother Bob, would be the eldest of 8 siblings. Graham’s love for cars began early in life. He and his friends shared a passion for racing, and many of these friendships would be lifelong. After his graduation from Ross Sheppard High School, he went to work with Blueline Printing and then began drafting with architectural firm Rule Wynn and Rule. He met his future wife Cerrie in 1966, and by 1967 they married and settled in Spruce Grove. Soon their family would grow to include 3 sons, Scott, Neil and Dean. He continued to work in drafting and drew house plans for people from home. However, he recognized a need for a shop that specialises in small engine repairs. In 1975 he opened The Lawnmower Hospital in Edmonton, AB. He and his wife Cerrie, and eventually his 3 sons, dedicated long hours to building the business which is still successfully in operation today.
Graham enjoyed many of the simple joys in life. Family dinners, gathering with friends, playing card games, and travelling were done as often as possible. Graham and Cerrie had many memorable vacations with friends. However, Graham’s favourite pastimes were activities with his car club and golf.
One of Graham’s most treasured belongings was his 1923 Model T which he painstakingly restored over decades. After his retirement in 2009, Graham was able to dedicate enough time to get the Model T complete and ready to show. Graham took immense pride in showing the hot rod that he had first envisioned, and drawn, as a young boy. Through the years he truly loved spending time with his friends in the E.S.R.A. in Edmonton and Smokin’ Oldies Car Club in Nanaimo.
For many years before his retirement, Sunday mornings usually meant a tee time was booked. After his retirement, he was on a course whenever he was able. Part of the joy of golf for Graham was gathering with his buddies on the course and in the clubhouse. He looked forward to a Hot Dog at the 9th Hole and enjoying refreshments with his friends post game. Many friendships were made on courses in Alberta, Palm Desert and on Vancouver Island.
To his wife Cerrie, Graham was a lifelong partner, supporter through difficult times, travel companion, and daily card game opponent. Most importantly Graham was the person with whom she shared her life joys and experiences over the course of 56 years.
Graham's 3 sons and their wives, Scott (Teresa), Neil (Dina), Dean (Dana), and 6 Grandchildren (Amanda, Nicholas, Kaia, Kiyomi, Kyson, and Kynley) will all hold him in their hearts. To his sons, Graham was a mentor. He taught them the necessary skills needed to continue running the family business. Memories of Graham will be shared with smiles and laughter for years to come.
So many will miss Graham including his 5 remaining siblings Bob (Lynn), Tish (Nick), Greg (Drew), John (Tausha), Doug (Karen) and their families. As well as many in-laws, nieces and nephews, lifelong friends and close friends that were like family. He was loved by many and will live on in memories as someone who was always offering to lend a hand, gather for a drink or a meal, or just chat.
Graham, your infectious spirit will not be easily forgotten, thank you for what you gave to us all.
