It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Mom, Hazel Lynn Merchant (nee Patrick), at Dufferin Place, Nanaimo on the 22nd of November, 2022. Lynn left us peacefully at the age of 80, surrounded by love and her loved ones.
Lynn was predeceased by her parents, Muriel Patrick (nee Willcock), and Cyril Patrick; sisters, Joyce and Betty of Victoria, BC; and her beloved dog, Scout. She is survived by her older brother, Robert (Bob), and sister, Barb; her ex-husband and good friend, Keith Custance; daughters, Patti (Kieran), Sandy, Sue (Kevin); and grandchildren, Josh, Blaike, Kayla, Karly, Lane, Derek, Tate; as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Lynn was born in Banff in 1942, and her family moved to Victoria when she was a young child. True to her love of fashion and sense of style, she had a short but sweet modelling career before moving into banking. She married Keith in 1961, and they moved to Saskatchewan while Keith was in the Navy. Their daughters, Patti and Sandy were born in Regina before they moved to Vancouver, BC in 1966. Their third daughter, Susie, was born in Burnaby, where they bought their first house and made many great memories with neighbours, friends, multiple pets, and much laughter. In her later years, she moved to Nanaimo with her daughter, Sandy, and enjoyed many good years with her island family, and exploring nature.
Lynn was a wonderful mother who devoted her efforts to creating a nurturing home, while instilling the values to raise strong, independent daughters. Lynn was a fun, feisty, warm and compassionate woman with a cheeky sense of humour; she loved shopping, music and most of all being surrounded by her family.
Her family and friends would like to gratefully acknowledge the care received from the amazing staff at Dufferin Place in Nanaimo - you gave her a loving community. We would also like to thank Bishop Caleb Lawrence, for his compassionate visit to our Mom (and us) on the evening before she passed, much gratitude. (St. Philip-by-the-Sea, Lantzville)
The family requests that in lieu of flowers please make donations in Lynn’s honour to the Alzheimer’s Society (Alzheimer.ca).
