It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Arthur Edward (Ted) Tidey, aged 96, whose much-loved wife of fifty-seven years, Helen, predeceased him by fourteen years. He died peacefully at the Nanaimo Seniors Village in the early morning of 16th October, 2023. He is survived by his three children and their spouses, Marilyn and Tony Browning, John Tidey and Deanna Bickerton, and Paul Tidey and Paige Fisher. He is also survived by his ten grandchildren, and his fourteen great grandchildren.
Ted was born in the Sussex town of Portslade, England, and emigrated to Canada from England with his brother Frank in 1949 on the Empress of Canada after having been stationed in Malta during the latter stages of the second world war.
Ted spent his working life in the travel business in the pre-internet era. He made travel arrangements for individuals, occasionally for the rich and famous, and on many occasions accompanied groups on tours of various, and sometimes exotic, parts of the world.
The gateway to Ted’s faith, which was central to his life, was likely through his time as a choirboy in Keymer Parish church in Sussex, England. He attended Evensong regularly while in Malta, and was deeply involved in various Anglican churches together with Helen. Amongst other roles, he served as warden for two years at St Clement’s Anglican Church in Toronto.
Ted and Helen, retired to Vancouver Island in 1994 to be close to their sons, John, and Paul, and later on, Marilyn.
Many thanks to Dr. Zuccaro for his many years of care for Ted, and especially as he entered the final stages of his life, and thanks to the staff and nurses at the Nanaimo Seniors Village.
