Obituary of Robert F Bering
On Saturday, October 22, 2022, our Dad, Robert F Bering, joined our Mom, Mary Lynn (Davis) Bering in eternal life. He was born in Indianapolis on February 25, 1934, to Joseph Jacob Sr., and Helen (Shepard) Bering, and was the youngest of 3 siblings, which included Joseph Jr, and Elizabeth (Bettie), all of whom predeceased him. During his childhood, he was a member of the Cub Scouts and was one of the top carriers for the Indianapolis Star, winning several awards. He was a starter on the Indianapolis City Champion St. Joan of Arc junior high school football team in 1949. He attended Cathedral and Shortridge High Schools and entered the Army in 1953. While in the Army, during the Korean War, he served as a Radio Communication Specialist, and was part of a forward ground team that confirmed ship to ground missile test strikes – during the time he was stationed in the Baltic Sea area. He was a Non-Commissioned Officer and was discharged honorably with the rank of Sergeant. After his tour of duty, he enrolled at Lain Technical Institute in Indianapolis, graduating with honors with a degree in drafting. He was employed by Mallory, PSI Indiana, Telonic, and PPG Industries -- where he was a project engineer overseeing the design and construction of glass curtain walls on high rise buildings. In 1975, he started his career in manufacturing management, spending 20 years at Indiana Steel and Wire in Muncie. He concluded his employment in 1995 as Plant Engineer of the Wire Mill, and was a member of the American Institute of Plant Engineers. He joined Meijer in 1997 and worked at the gas station until his retirement in 2016 at the age of eighty-two. As a part of the Silent Generation, he was extremely self-sufficient and was always working to provide for his family. His employment activities in general home repair enabled him to teach his sons about furniture building, carpentry, plumbing, drywalling, carpeting, roofing, painting, and especially, his hobby of automobile mechanics. Fishing was never far from his thoughts, and the entire family was always involved in a local weekend fishing trip. While he was always an example of duty and discipline, his most valuable characteristic was setting the example for his sons of how to be a proper gentleman. He married Mom, on September 10, 1960, at St. Joan of Arc in Indianapolis. She was the extrovert to his introvert, and both were inseparable as best friends in life. We always knew that no matter the situations in life, things would always be all right. Dad was also one to give back to his community. He was a member of and former President of R.E.A.C.T., an emergency channel monitoring team of CB radio enthusiasts. Since 1976, he and Mom were members of St. Mary and St. Lawrence Churches in Muncie, and both spent many years volunteering at the St. Vincent de Paul thrift store and society in Muncie. He leaves to cherish his memory sons Robert (Heather) Bering, Michael (Valerie) Bering, and Christopher Bering. Also surviving are his grandchildren Kevin, Ashley, Robert III, and Jacob, along with great-grandchildren Louie, Linkoln, and Lennon. He will also be missed by man’s best friend, Buttons, who comforted him greatly after Mom’s passing in 2019. Family and friends may call from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Saturday, November 5, 2022, at Elm Ridge Funeral Home, 4600 West Kilgore Avenue, Muncie, Indiana 47304. Services will be held Saturday, November 5, 2022, at 1 p.m. at Elm Ridge Funeral Home with military rites conducted by the Delaware County Honor Guard.
