He was born Saturday, July 19, 1941, the son of Paul and Martha Thornburg. He graduated from Yorktown in 1959. Shortly after he married the love of his life, Brenda and they shared fifty-six years together.
Mikel and Brenda attended Garden of Gethsemane Church in Muncie. Mikel was president of the United Methodist Men for several years. He was also a fifty year member of Indiana’s Free and Accepted Masons, Lodge #46, the Exchange Club of Muncie, and The American Legion 0321, Yorktown.
Mikel worked at Brodericks Company/Ontario Forge in Muncie. Mikel retired from Fisher Body in 2005 where he taught apprenticeship and quality assurance classes.
Watching football on Sundays, traveling to Myrtle Beach with his family and spending afternoons at his pool with friends and family were some of his favorite pastimes.
Survivors include his daughters, Mindy (Mark) Kennedy, Marty (Jeff) Adkins, and Melissa (Jeff) Clark; brother, Paul Thornburg; grandchildren, Kelly, Mikel, Chase, Quinn, Carter and Ethan; and great-grandchildren, Caleb, Caitlynn, Avery, and Aubrey.
He was preceded in death by his wife of fifty-six years, Brenda Thornburg; parents, Paul and Martha Thornburg; and a sister Rhonda Corn.

Services will be held Wednesday, November 3, 2021, at 2 p.m. at Elm Ridge Funeral Home, 4600 West Kilgore Avenue, Muncie, Indiana 47304. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, masks and social distancing are required.
