

Born in Wabash, Indiana on July 17, 1933, the son of Harold S. and Zella V. Hines. He moved to Muncie as a small child. John attended St. Lawrence School and Muncie Central High School, graduating in 1951. He attended Ball State University for a year then proudly served in the United States Air Force being stationed in Tokyo, Japan and Wright Patterson Air Force Base from 1952-1960.
He graduated from Ball State University in 1959 and was a member of Sigma Tau Gamma fraternity. He was employed with Indiana State Employment Service when he met the love of his life, Nancy Koontz Hines and married at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in 1966. He transferred to Indiana Workforce Development /Job Source in Anderson for thirty years, retiring in 1996.
He was a lifelong member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus, council 560. He was a life member of American Legion #127 Anderson AMVETS Post 12 Muncie/ Royerton, serving as commander from 1965-1967 and also State Finance officer. Life member of Blue Knights International Law Enforcement, motorcycle club IND 1 chapter serving as finance officer.
He was a member of the Ball State Cardinal Varsity club and Alumni. He was a member of the National Rifle Association. John was an avid Honda Goldwing Motorcycle enthusiast until age eighty-two.
He proudly served the Muncie Police Department Reserve retiring as Captain from 1982- 2003.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Zella Hines; sister, Mary Ann Nitterhouse (Charles); in-laws, Jesse and Esta Terry; aunt, Rose Elaine Burket, several sisters and brothers in-law.
He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Nancy; three children, Michelle Garrett (Dan), Shauna Heltzel (Greg Russell), and John H. Hines; five grandchildren, Jennifer Lightfoot (Dustin), Ethan and Bailey Heltzel, and Payton and Maddison Hines; two bonus grandchildren, Payton and Tony Russell; two great-granddaughters, Kallie and Della Lightfoot; brother, James Hines (Loretta) several nieces, nephews, sisters and brothers in-laws.
Family and friends may call from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, August 9, 2022, at Elm Ridge Funeral Home, 4600 West Kilgore Avenue, Muncie, Indiana 47304. The Rosary will be recited from 6 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
Mass of Catholic Burial for John will be celebrated Wednesday, August 10, 2022, at 10 a.m. at St. Lawrence Catholic Church, 820 E Charles St, Muncie, Indiana 47305. Father Coady Owens will officiate. Following, entombment with Military Honors will take place at Elm Ridge Mausoleum.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to family physician, Dr. Dwayne Adrian, I.U. Health Ball Hospital and I.U. Health Hospice for their special care of John during his brief illness.
