He was born December 14, 1928 in Anderson, the son of James Allen Smith Sr. and Verda (Rich) Smith. Herbert was a member of Westside Church of Christ where he served as Deacon and Elderfor 45 years. He retired from Borg Warner in 1994 after 47 years of service. Mr. Smith was a Korean War U.S. Army veteran. Herbert was loved, respected and honored by family, his church family and friends.
Survivors include his soulmate, faithful, loving and devoted wife of 66 years, Betty (Bailey) Smith; three daughters, Deborah Perry, Susan (Thomas) Cloninger and Teresa (Donald) Allison; siblings, James A. (Marjorie) Smith Jr., Beulah Elaine (Donald) Taylor and A. Paul (Peggy) Smith; seven grandchildren, Ross (Alycia) Perry, Kristy (Matt) Burch, Katie (Casey) Robinson, Bevin (Arthur) Green, Megan (Hayden) Cruce, Kassandra Allison and Bethany (fiancé Thomas Williams) Allison; great-grandchildren, Cade Green, Riley Burch, Gavin Burch, Lucy Robinson, Arthur Thomas Green, Jace Cruce, Kian Green and baby girl Cruce arriving in April; several nieces; nephews, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Eulah Neal; a brother, Reuben Smith and a son-in-law, Kevin Perry.
Services will be held 1:00 p.m., Saturday, January 28, 2017at Elm Ridge Funeral Home, 4600 W. Kilgore Avenue, Muncie, IN 47304 with Mike Gors, Don Allison and Tom Cloninger officiating. Military Rites by Veterans of Delaware County Honor Guard will follow services at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Gardens of Memory Cemetery, north of Muncie.
Family and friends may call from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m., Saturday at Elm Ridge Funeral Home.
