Obituary of Harold Woldmoe
Major Harold Edward Woldmoe, 97, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on November 9, 2024. Born in Brooklyn, New York, on July 11, 1927, Harry proudly served in the Navy during World War II aboard the cruiser USS Los Angeles. Following the war, he returned to complete high school at Ft. Hamilton in 1947, after which he attended Kent State University. While at Kent, Harry participated in ROTC, ultimately becoming an officer in the Army. He later resigned his commission to transfer to the Air Force for flight school. In 1952, Harry entered basic pilot training at Spence Air Force Base in Moultrie, Georgia. He advanced his training at Goodfellow Air Base and continued to jet training at Victoria Air Force Base in Texas. Harry’s true passion came to life at Fighter School, Nellis Air Base, in Nevada where he became part of the 51st Fighter Wing, flying his favorite aircraft, the F-86 Sabre, during the Korean War. He served in Vietnam from 1968 to 1969, and completed 160 missions with the 366th Tactical Fighter Wing out of Da Nang. Harry retired from the Air Force in October 1970. After his retirement, Harry embraced an active lifestyle as an avid runner and cyclist, frequently going on 6-10 mile runs and enjoying 30-40 mile bike rides. To stay engaged, he took a job at the Muncie Tennis Club, where he became beloved by the staff and members alike. Harry showcased his talent as a racquet stringer, even stringing for the Ball State University tennis team under Coach Bill Richards for several decades. One of Harry’s greatest joys was fishing trips to Canada with his two sons, where he loved pursuing Walleye and Big Northern Pike. He also cherished family gatherings, always full of life and known for his playful pranks. Harry is survived by his devoted wife of 71 years, Ruby Chiswell Woldmoe, his one and only love. He is also survived by his two sons, Todd Woldmoe (Debra Trent) and Mark Woldmoe (Ronda). He adored being “Poppie” to his grandsons, Zachary (Amelia), Luke (Kelly), Austin (Sarah), and Alex (Molly), and he treasured his great-grandsons, Zeke, Cooper, Beau, and Owen. Harry is preceded in passing by his mom and dad, Virginia and Harold Woldmoe.
