She was born to the late William Leroy Fleming and Mary Lizzie McGimpsey on May 30, 1938 in Burke Co.
At an early age Rachel left Morganton and moved to Oxford, N.C. where she received her education. She later moved back to Morganton and then moved to New York where she met Melvin Harris, Sr., and later gave birth to a son Melvin Harris, Jr. In 1977 Rachel moved back home to Morganton and married Earl Fleming in 1990.
Rachel was a former member of Slades Chapel AMEZ Church and current member of Praise Assembly of God under the leadership of Pastor Kevin Crawford. Rachel was known for her outgoing personality and her ability to never meet a stranger. She worked a number of jobs and loved working with the public, especially children. She retired from Blue Ridge Community Action but continued to be a foster grandparent and offer help to any and everyone. She loved people and people loved her.
In addition to her parents, Rachel was preceded in death by three brothers James Fleming, Isaac Fleming, and Charles Fleming.
Those left to cherish her memories include her son Melvin Harris, Jr., sister; Bernice Alexander of Long Beach, California, brother; Thomas Thurman McGimpsey (Eloise) of Plainfield, N.J. granddaughter; Sierra Forney of Belmont, N.C. also surviving include four sister-in-laws; Doris Fleming, Willa Ann Fleming, Vivian Martin, and Lola Demetris Tucker all of Morganton along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends whom she loved.
Funeral Services for Rachel Lee Fleming will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, September 09, 2022 in the Chapel of Kirksey Funeral Home.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to service at the funeral home. 1:00 to 2:00 p.m.
The Fleming Family has entrusted Kirksey Funeral Home of Morganton with arrangements.
