Herbert Lee Surratt, age 69, of Morganton, peacefully departed this life on March 28, 2019 after battling stage 4 Multiple Myeloma. Herbert was oldest son of the late Herbert Daniel Surratt and Bertha Lee (Shade) Surratt, born December 14, 1949 in Morganton.
At a young age, Herbert attended McElrath Chapel AME Church where he enjoyed singing in the church choir. In 1969 he joined the Army and served for 3 years as a Personnel Supervisor at Fort Hood in Texas during the time of the Vietnam War. Herbert later received his associates degree in accounting and law enforcement from Western Piedmont Community College. He served as an employee with Burke County DSS, The Morganton Police Department, Good Year Tire, and Sara Lee Bakery where he retired from in 2013 after 13 years of service. Herbert was kind hearted, strong spirited, and loved by many. He loved to cook and was an avid Redskins fan.
Along with his parents, Herbert is preceded in death by a sister.
Herbert, with his former wife Carolyn Everett-Nartey, is survived by a daughter, Kellie Renee Surratt; seven siblings, Linda Carson, Brenda Surratt, Trudy Surratt, Debra Surratt, Hubert Surratt, Henry Surratt and Chris Surratt; and a host of relatives and friends. Herbert will be greatly missed.
A graveside service with military honors will be held at 12 noon on Friday, April 5, 2019 at the Western Carolina State Veteran's Cemetery in Black Mountain.
