At the age of 14, Larry began working at Patterson Hardware and later became manager at age 16. The store burned down a couple of years later, therefore he then went to work for Deprima Appliance in Berwick, which is where he learned his plumbing trade. He decided to further his skills and worked for Gulf Welding Supply delivering oxygen cylinders for about 3 years.
In 1947, Larry opened his own business which began his life’s work, Doiron’s Plumbing. From there it became Doiron Construction & Development doing offsite construction, beginning in Morgan City and Bayou Vista. His first major project was installing the first water line from Leeville to Grand Isle. The engineers in charge of the project were impressed by his work and asked him to expand into the New Orleans area. This began a series of work for over 25 years of developing subdivisions in South Louisiana. He developed Bayou Estates in Stephensville and then developed Lakeside Subdivision in Morgan City.
In all of this, he was always interested in public service, therefore he decided to run for police jury and was eventually elected president. He cut the ribbon on the new courthouse, which he was always very proud of. Four years later, he was elected and served on the City Council of Morgan City for 4 years. He enjoyed people calling him with their problems so that he could help them find a solution. He also worked to improve city streets’ drainage and keeping it clean.
His passion was assisting with the Corps of Engineers to improve the backwater flooding and drainage. During that time, he also served for 27 years on the Morgan City Harbor and Terminal District, most of that time as President. Again, majority of his time was spent working with the Corps of Engineers on the back water flooding. He then retired to develop his final project, Oak Harbor Subdivision on Hwy 70, a beautiful restricted waterfront property subdivision.
He spent most of his life living on the water and enjoyed the scenery and wildlife it provided. He had a passion for working and loved people, especially his wife and family. He was a strong, courageous, passionate, driven, hard-working, loving and caring man. He left a mark on this world and will be missed by so many who loved him.
Larry is survived by his wife, Frances Doiron; two sons, Jessie Doiron and his wife Jeannie, and Larry Doiron II and his wife Angela all of Stephensville; three daughters, Kathy Shephard, Susan LeMaster, and Dawn Staten; twelve grandchildren, Carla Harris, Daniel Shephard, Stephanie Oliver, Laura Lerman, Lacy McCaffery, Jesse Doiron, Jr., Cole Doiron, Dr. Tucker E.
