On March 11th, 2019, Fern June Chouinard (née Burton), beloved mother of Joanne and Diane, and adored grandmother of Ryan (Alyssa), passed away peacefully at the age of 89. She is survived by her sisters Zella (Jerry) and Diane (Paul), and predeceased by Pat. Also remembered by George (husband of her deceased sister Elaine).
Born in New Carlisle, Québec on June 2nd, 1929, and raised in New Richmond, Fern graduated from Mount Allison School for Girls (New Brunswick) as the gold medal winner. Her first position was to teach multiple grades in a one room schoolhouse. She went on to Montréal to train as a Registered Nurse at the Royal Victoria Hospital, where she worked for many years as Nurse, Nurse Clinician Teacher, Night Supervisor, and Head Nurse. An accomplished and independent woman, she retired at the age of 62 to enjoy her good friends, travelling, theatre and movies, concerts and museums. Always an avid learner, she took courses in a variety of subjects. She played a significant role in the childhood of her beloved grandson, Ryan, and spent much time with him.
Thanks go to Céline Lachance, Delphine Tremblay and all the staff at Mark & Lachance audioprosthetists for years of kindness and attention to her needs. Also to Carlos Solomon and the staff at Sélection Vista Residence, where she spent many happy years.
The family is grateful to the CHSLD Saint Margaret’s Residence 4th floor staff, especially Henri and Rose, for their kindness and tender care. Most particularly our thanks go to her caregiver Dianna Palamarek, for her devotion and support.
Greggy, as she was named by her grandson and known thereafter to family, will be dearly missed, but with us always.
A service will be held in the Chapel of Collins Clarke MacGillivray White Funeral Home (5610 Sherbrooke Street West, Montréal H4A 1W5) on Saturday, March 23rd, 2019 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Alzheimer’s Society or the charity of your choice would be appreciated.
