Growing up on the Bayland in Barbados, he played both for long hours with the boys. He later on went on to play cricket with Middlesex and football with Notre-Dame. Charles was always an avid sports fan throughout his life, and after immigrating to Canada, his love of sports expanded to hockey (big fan of the Montreal Canadians) as well as American football, basketball, tennis and golf.
Charles worked as a cabinet maker for the family business in his early years, and in 1955 he utilized his skills to work as a merchant seaman as the ship's carpenter. During his period of working on the merchant ship, he married his childhood sweetheart, Barbara Hinds, on December 16, 1961 at St Patrick's Church in St Michael's Parish. His work at this time gained him world experience through travelling around the globe. Spanning several continents, his decade of merchant work would become a source of his fascinating stories and entertainment to his children, grand and great grandchildren, captivating our imagination for many years. His travels would come to an end in 1965, when he immigrated to Canada, settling in Montreal, Quebec. There he used his craft as a carpenter to work on monumental projects, including the construction of the Ville-Marie expressway and several pavilions for Man and his World during Montreal's iconic Expo 67.
