William Morris Daugherty “Bill” of Montgomery, Alabama born June 4, 1941, passed away Saturday, May 7, 2022, peacefully at his home. He is preceded in death by his mother Mildred Mullins Daugherty, his father Manuel Preston Daugherty, Sr., and his sister Susan Daugherty Burns. He is survived by his beloved wife Carolyn of 55 years, daughters Lyn Vickers (Todd), Andrea Brassell (Patrick), precious and gifted granddaughter Erin Henleigh, brother M. Preston Daugherty, Jr., sister Ann Askew and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was born and raised in Birmingham, graduated in 1964 from Auburn University/Alabama Polytechnic Institute with a Civil Engineering degree and U.S. Army Commission in the Corps of Engineers. Graduation was delayed several years by rewarding cooperative-education work with the Tennessee Valley Authority construction division in Florence, AL. Following active duty in Anchorage, Alaska he began his professional engineering career in Roseburg, Oregon with the USDA Forest Service. After a brief assignment in West Virginia, he and Carolyn settled in Montgomery, Alabama closer to grandparents to raise their daughters. He served 25 years in the Montgomery state office retiring in 1999.
He was active in Frazer Church for almost 50 years serving as a Board of Stewards member, usher both inside and outside, Roll Up Your Sleeves ministry, Job Exchange, and MACOA Meals-On-Wheels.
He loved kids, shown by his service in the Capital City (Downtown) Optimist Club (Friend of Youth), Frazer Upward Basketball, nursery ministry, and tutoring in public schools. Enjoying most sports, he coached both girls’ softball and boys’ basketball. Having only one grandchild he tried hard and succeeded in spoiling Erin while watching her improve her gymnastics skills through much practice and dedication to the sport. He also loved animals and enjoyed volunteering at the Montgomery Humane Shelter. As an avid Auburn sports fan, he attended many of their different sporting events.
The funeral service will be at Frazer Church, 6000 Atlanta Highway, Montgomery, Alabama on Thursday, May 12, 2022, at 2:00 with visitation an hour before the service. Graveside services will be held at Alabama Heritage immediately following.
