Ruby I. Roper, 101, of Montgomery passed away on December 21st, 2015 at Jackson Hospital. One of 10 siblings, she was born on December 25th, 1913 in Pike County to Charles Ivey and Martha Alford Ivey. On December 17th, 1936 she married William J. Roper. He preceded her in death in 2004. In addition to her siblings and her husband, she was preceded in death by 2 sons, Ivey L. Roper and William J. Roper, Jr.; a grandson, Stephen L. Roper; and a daughter-in-law, Ingrid Roper.
Ruby served as business manager of Liberty Cab Company until continuing employment with the State of Alabama Archives. Ruby was a member of the Aldersgate United Methodist Church, Montgomery Chapter 180 Order of the Eastern Star for over 50 years, Order of the Amaranth, and Daughters of the Nile. Ruby loved to travel the world and in her later years she loved to quilt, knit, and crochet donating many of her creations to charity.
Ruby is survived by 2 grand-daughters; Dianne (Tony) Orlando and Sandra Hughins both of Green Bay, WI; great-grandchildren, Daniel Orlando of Green Bay, WI and Kristin Orlando of Shawano, WI and Chris Hughins of Birmingham; and Great-Great Grandchildren Austin and Tyler Hughins of Green Bay, WI. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
Visitation for Ruby I. Roper will be held on Sunday, December 27th at White Chapel –Greenwood Funeral Home, 909 Lincoln Rd from 2-4 PM. Graveside services will be held on Monday, December 28th at 1:00 PM at Greenwood Cemetery, 909 Lincoln Rd. A memorial service will follow at 2:30 PM at Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 6610 Vaughn Rd., Montgomery.
In lieu of flowers, Ruby requests donations be made in her behalf to Aldersgate United Methodist Church of Montgomery.
A special thanks to Dr. Roebuck and the nurses and staff at Jackson Hospital ICU and 6th Floor for their care and compassion. The family would also like to offer a very special thank you to Michael Hardy who served as Ruby’s caregiver for many years.
