Col. Robert Borrah Goldberg (USA Ret.) 92, of Montgomery, Al died on March 1, 2023, months after his debilitating stroke. Col. Goldberg was a retired DARCOM comptroller and defense contractor. Bob was a decorated veteran of the Vietnam War having served two tours of duty. He received the Air Medal, the Bronze Star, and two Meritorious Service medals.
Bob was born in Boston (Dorchester), Massachusetts, November 4, 1930, to immigrant parents, Isabel (Burnim) and Morris Goldberg, a baker. The youngest of three brothers, he worked through the Depression to support their family by selling newspapers, shining shoes, and collecting scrap metal for sale. He joined Army ROTC at Boston English High School which began his lifelong commitment to military service. He graduated from Bentley College and earned a master’s degree from Catholic University of America.
Bob was known for his warmth, humor, playfulness, generosity, and deep loyalty to his family, his Jewish faith, and country. He was an active member and taught religious school for many years at Temple Beth El of Alexandria, VA and served as president of B’nai Brith. Bob was a Free Mason, a member of the American Legion and VFW. After moving to Montgomery in 2007 with his wife, Betty, and son Erik, he was an active member of Temple Beth Or and various veteran’s organizations.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Beringer Goldberg, his sons; Gary S. Goldberg (Junko), of Vorhees, NJ, Erik M. Goldberg of Montgomery, and David A. Berman (Kimberly) of Fredericksburg, VA. He leaves behind granddaughters Karina Goldberg and Tessa Berman. His extended family includes his centenarian mother-in-law, Shirley Beringer, Rick (Marlene) Beringer, Ken (Nathalie) Beringer and Leslie Beringer Fitterman. He was a beloved uncle to Eleanor (Richard) Friedman, Emily S. Goldberg, Marla A. (Thomas) Goldberg-Jamate , Limor Guberman, Michael (Lydia) Beringer, Leigh Anne (David) Nomberg, Kevin Beringer, Bradley (Julia) Beringer, Binyomin (Hadasa) Fitterman, J. Brown Fitterman, Doran Fitterman, and Asher Fitterman.
Bob was predeceased by his parents, his identical twin brothers, Sumner Goldberg and Coleman Goldberg, his nephew Brian Goldberg and his former wife Judith (Guberman) Troiano.
A graveside service will be held Friday, March 3, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. in the Eternal Rest Section of Oakwood Cemetery.
