Paul Wilhite Miles, Sr. (1935-2023) passed away on Tuesday, February 14, 2023. The funeral will be held graveside on Tuesday, February 21, 2023 at Greenwood Cemetery (909 Lincoln Road, Montgomery, AL 36109) at 11:00 A.M.
Paul was born in Atlanta, GA and attended North Fulton High School where he met his future wife, Mary, in 1950 during a high school choir tour of Cuba. He attended Emory University where he was a member of K.A. fraternity and excelled at wrestling and track, receiving his B.A. in History in 1957. He and Mary were married in 1963 in Atlanta while he was working with Royal Globe Insurance. He then moved to New York with Chubb and Son. He worked with Chubb in the Manhattan, Atlanta and Denver offices for seven years, specializing in Bonding and Surety,
In 1971 Paul and his young family moved to Montgomery where he was a partner in I. Berman Insurance. He later became Chairman of Colonial Insurance where he worked for 25 years. He traveled extensively throughout the country lecturing on the insurance industry through the American Management Association and after formal retirement worked with Turner Insurance in the Bonding Department up until the present day.
An active member in the Montgomery community throughout his life, Paul served as an Elder in Trinity Presbyterian Church and taught Sunday School in the Bloodworth Class for over 20 years. He was Chairman of the Board of the Salvation Army, The Lighthouse Foundation, and St. James School. A lifelong supporter of music in the arts, he was President of Community Concerts. He also served as President of the Montgomery Downtown Rotary Club in 2013-14 during its 100th year anniversary. Paul enjoyed traveling, visiting Europe several times in addition to South America, Japan and Cuba. He also enjoyed being a lifelong member of The Buckhead Boys in Atlanta.
Paul is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mary de Saussure Clarke Miles, and his four children: Mary Reynolds Miles Vainstein of Montgomery; Courtenay de Saussure Miles of Taos; NM, Paul Wilhite Miles, Jr. (Ryoko) of Osaka, Japan; and Macon Spencer Miles (Kristen) of Colorado Springs. He is also survived by eight grandchildren: Aria Bianca Maria Allan (Robert); Alexander Francois de Saussure Vainstein; Caleb Clarke Miles; Emery Catherine Miles; Catherine Spencer Miles; Paul Wilhite Miles, III; William Ryuto Miles; and Spencer Haruto Miles. And two great-grandchildren: Gavin Francis Clarke Allan and Luisa Spencer Marie Allan.
Pallbearers will be Paul Miles, Jr., Macon Miles, Alexander Vainstein, Caleb Miles, Robert Allan and James Loeb, Jr. All family and friends are invited to a reception to be held immediately after the service at the Miles home (744 Cloverdale Road, Montgomery, AL 36106). In lieu of flowers, a memorial gift may be made to Trinity Presbyterian Church; St. James School; or the Rotary Foundation, care of the Montgomery Rotary Club.
