Marshall St. John Green Jr., a lifelong resident of Montgomery County, passed away after a brief illness in Auburn, Alabama at the age of 87. He was surrounded by his family that dearly loved him.
Marshall was preceded in death by his parents; Marshall “Mike” St. John Green Sr. and Lula May Meriwether Green, and sisters Lettie Craig Green Cornwell (Virgil), Kate Olive Green Gordon (Collins), and May Marshall Green Ellis (Ned).
Marshall is survived by his wife of 58 years, Laura “Betty” Hooper Green; his children Buddy Green (Karen), Melinda Norris (Mark), Stephanie Boyd, and Jennifer Green; grandchildren Kathryn Hagan (Lane), Hannah Wyatt (Whitney), William Green (Mallory), Daniel Faulkner, Elizabeth Boyd, and Emilyn Boyd; and great-grandchildren, Libby, Drew, Grace, and Ann Curtis Hagan, and Will and Caroline Green.
Growing up in Montgomery County, Marshall attended Pintlala Elementary, Cloverdale Jr. High and Sidney Lanier High School. He then received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Agricultural Education and a Master’s Degree in Education from Auburn University. He was a sales representative for Science Research Association (S.R.A.) selling educational and reading materials. In 1974, he was elected to the Montgomery County School Board of Education. Throughout his years as an educator, Marshall’s roles varied from teacher, principal, and headmaster at Catoma Elementary, Dannelly Elementary, Carver Jr. High School, Hooper Academy, Booker T. Washington, and South Montgomery County High School. After retirement, Marshall and Betty traveled the country in their RV, spending the majority of their time in the beautiful mountains of Colorado.
The family will gather for a private graveside service at Greenwood Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to “Libby’s Friends”, a non-profit organization created in honor of Libby Hagan, Marshall’s great-granddaughter. Libby’s Friends was created to help ease the financial burden of living with a disability.
