John Clark Gamble, age 77, of Montgomery, AL died May 18th at his home. He was born to the late Paul Arthur and Dorothy Clark Gamble on October 25, 1940 in Shenandoah, Iowa. John attended Shenandoah High School and earned a B.S. degree from Iowa State University. He was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. After graduating from Iowa State, John served as an Army officer in Aschaffenburg, Germany, and subsequently served his country for 20 years in the National Guard.
After John’s service in Germany, he continued his education receiving a Masters in Science from Auburn University and a Ph.D. from the University of Illinois in the field of Agricultural Economics. He became a tenured Associate Extension Professor within the Department of Agricultural at the University of Kentucky and later moved to Alabama to take a job as an Agricultural Economist for Regions Financial Corporation. He retired after 23 years as an Agricultural Economic Administrator for the Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries.
In 1966 John married Mary Inzer Walthall. After her death in 1982, John devoted himself to raising his three daughters. In 1992 John married Tina Edwards. John and his beloved Tina enjoyed spending time at their second home in Highlands, North Carolina with family and friends and also trips to the beach. John served as Chairman of the National Council of State Agricultural Finance Programs from 1987-1996. He was the former President of the Alabama Agribusiness Council, past Chairman of the National Coalition of State Agricultural Loan Mediation Programs and served as Commissioner of the Alabama Water Resources Commission. John was active in Trinity Presbyterian Church where he served as an ordained elder, a deacon, and taught Sunday school for several years. He was also an active member of the Bloodworth Sunday school class.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Mary Inzer Walthall Gamble and his brother, James Robert Gamble of Council Bluffs, Iowa. He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Tina Edwards Gamble; three daughters; Susan Gamble Weingarten (Walter) of Birmingham, Melissa Gamble Hagan (Cobb) of Birmingham and Elizabeth Gamble Hauenstein (Wayne) of Atlanta and grandchildren; Julia Weingarten, Sam Weingarten, Willis Hagan, Mary Inzer Hagan, Francis Hagan, Garrett Hauenstein, Anna Hauenstein and Miller Hauenstein. He is also survived by Tina’s children and their families; Scott Gilreath (Lynn), Kyle Gilreath (Caroline) of Auburn, Amy Head (Martin) of Auburn and Clay Gilreath (Katie) and grandchildren; Emily Gilreath, Ashly Gilreath, Will Gilreath, Walker Gilreath, Casey Gilreath, Holman Head, Bennett Head and Davis Head.
