John Tom “Coach” Jones, 90, passed away early Tuesday morning at his home in Lowndesboro. Visitation will be held on Friday, July 18, 2014 from 5:00pm – 7:00pm at White Chapel Greenwood Funeral Home. Coach Jones was one of the first inductees in the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame and also in the Robert E. Lee Hall of Fame. After his stint in the Navy in World War II, he began his coaching career in Hayneville, and later coached at Lee High School when it opened in 1955. He served as freshman coach at Auburn University under Shug Jordan and later became head coach at Troy University. Coach Jones is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 64 years, Evelyn; son, John Tom Jones (Pam); daughters, Paula Turner (Marion), Joni Leigh Combs (Gary), Susan Valerie Jones; sister, Bill Ham; brother, James Melvin Jones; and three grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Diabetes Association in memory of Coach Jones.
