Early in John’s life he was a fireman with the City of Montgomery and during this time he met and married the love of his life Patricia Ann Loftin. John also worked over 35 years for the United States Postal Service serving mostly at the Eastbrook Branch in Montgomery. Additionally, John proudly served over 30 years in the United States Army Reserve. He was actively involved in his church, Eastern Hills Baptist Church in Montgomery, and for many years was a featured soloist for the church choir. John also was a dedicated member of the Carpenters for Christ program for over twenty years. John was an avid Auburn fan but also supported Florida State as well. John enjoyed spending time with family and friends as well as watching his grandchildren succeed in life. John is predeceased by his parents; but is survived by his wife Patricia, his sister Vera Long and brother Robert Barnes, sons Bill (Margaret) and Patrick, grandchildren Ashley Garland, Matthew Barnes, Emily Barnes, Kelly Barnes and great grandchildren Dash and Kayleigh Garland. He was lovingly known as Granddaddy by his family and Uncle John to nephews and nieces who loved and appreciated him.
Visitation will be held at Leak-Memory Funeral Home on Thursday, April 15, 2021, between 9:30 AM – 10:30 AM, followed by graveside services at 11:00 AM in Greenwood Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be family and friends.
