Dr. Javier De La Garza, 62, passed away unexpectedly on September 22, 2018. He was preceded in death by his parents, Abel and Maria De La Garza; a brother, John De La Garza; his father in law, Charles Whitaker; and his grandmother, Francisca Bueno. He is survived by his beloved wife, Carla De La Garza; his children, Javier Omar De La Garza (Vicky), Nadia Angelica Ochoa (Orlando), Brook Cummings (Nathan), Lizette Nicole De La Garza, Joseph Stefan De La Garza and Marcus Enrique De La Garza (Jamie); brothers, Abel De La Garza, Jr, Rudolfo De La Garza (Susie), Jorge Alberto De La Garza (Evelyn); sisters, Maria Alma Camacho (Joe) and Thelma Leticia De La Garza; his mother in law, Patsy Joan Whitaker; and his sister in law, Carol Heckenkemper. He is also survived by his 9 grandchildren and his niece Erica Lorenzo (Frank), and nephew Troy Heckenkemper (Brandie).
Dr. De La Garza had a successful medical career which began when he graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 1978, with a Bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy. He then went on to the University of Texas Southwest Medical School where he graduated in 1982. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine and a Fellowship in Gastroenterology at Scott & White Memorial Hospital and Clinic, in Temple, Texas. In 1987, he married his wife, Carla. For 30 years they had a private practice in South Texas. In 2017, he moved to Montgomery, Alabama, and established an in-house Gastroenterology practice at Jackson Hospital. He was also a lifelong Texas Longhorns fan.
A Memorial Service for Dr. De La Garza will be held on Tuesday, September 25, 2018, at 6:00 PM at Leak Memory Chapel with a visitation from 5:00-6:00 PM.
