Dr. Janice Ruth Wood, 68, passed away Dec. 18, 2023, in Montgomery, Alabama. Born in Morristown, Tennessee, Feb. 11, 1955, she was the daughter of Gordon Lee Wood and Edna Pearl Martin Wood. Janice graduated from White Pine High School in White Pine, Tennessee. She earned a BA in English from Carson-Newman University, an MA in Journalism from the University of South Carolina and a Ph.D. in Mass Communication and Media Arts from Southern Illinois University – Carbondale. Janice began her journalism career working for newspapers in Tennessee, North Carolina and South Carolina. She was employed in the advertising industry by Michelin and Insignia. She held faculty positions for Carson-Newman University, Union University, Texas Christian University and Auburn University, Montgomery. Janice loved newspapers, the arts, her dolls, her cats, Scrabble, and volunteering at the Montgomery Cancer Center. Janice will be remembered by her sister, Diana Wood Powers of Knoxville, Tennessee, her brother, Steve Wood of Concord, Massachusetts, her niece, Alicia Powers of Memphis, Tennessee, her nephew, Andrew Powers of Knoxville, Tennessee and a circle of friends and colleagues in several locations.
A family and friends' visitation for Janice will be held Saturday, December 23, 2023, at 10:00 AM at White Chapel-Greenwood Funeral Home, 909 Lincoln Road, Montgomery, Alabama 36109, followed by a celebration of life memorial service at 11:00 AM under the leadership of Rev. Lynn Hopkins and Lynette Morse. A burial service at Emma Jarnigan Cemetery in Morristown, TN will be held at 11:00 am on December 28, 2023, Dr. David Bluford officiating.
