James “Jim” McElvy Webb, age 78, passed away on Sunday, June 9, 2024. Jim was born in Montgomery, Alabama to Alpheus Braxton Webb Sr. and Martha McElvy Webb. He is survived by his children, Jeffrey Allen (Nikki) Webb and Jaime Webb (John) Conger; his grandchildren, Nancy Katheryne Webb (Nicholas) Graham, Vivian Jean Conger, Henry Matthews Conger; his great grandchild, Nancy Adeline Rose Graham; and his brother, Alpheus Braxton (Nini) Webb Jr.
Jim’s professional career began with Couch Construction out of Dothan, Alabama. From there, he spent several decades of employment with Brown Pipe Company, which later became Sherman Concrete Pipe Company. He further had a seven-year tenure with Thompson Engineering. For the last decade, he was with Alabama Pipe and Universal Precast. Jim was active with the Alabama Road Builders Association (ARBA), Alabama Asphalt Paving Association, Alabama Concrete Pipe Association, and the Alabama Bridge Builders Association. Jim served on or chaired numerous committees. Because of Jim’s fifty years of service to the industry, including his involvement as a sponsor, legislative champion, generous campaign contributor, and personal engagement, ARBA established a meritorious award in his name.
In retirement, he took great joy in gathering with friends and family. Jim pulled together a monthly lunch for industry retirees at Sinclair’s, one of his favorite restaurants where you could regularly find him doing the daily crossword and drinking his sweet tea. Jim, affectionately known as “Big Daddy,” poured much of his time and energy into his grandchildren. He was an avid fan and supporter of Auburn University, particularly the Engineering Department. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
A friends and family visitation for Jim will be held Thursday, June 13, 2024 from 12:30 PM to 2:00 PM at Leak Memory Chapel, 945 Lincoln Rd, Montgomery, Alabama 36109, followed by a celebration of life chapel service at 2:00 PM. Services will conclude with a burial in Greenwood Cemetery.
