James Caleb (J.C.) Snowden, 94, passed away on Tuesday, April 17, 2019. He was preceded in death by his son, John Paul Snowden, Sr., brothers, John and Jerriel and sister, Betty Snowden Wood. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Frankie J. Havird Snowden, one daughter, Wanda (Ken) Horn, two sons, Jay Snowden, Javan Snowden (Jill Benson) and grandchildren, John Paul (P.J.), Josh, Amber, Branson and Grant.
J.C. was honored to serve his country during WW II. He joined the Merchant Marine in 1943 and left the service in 1952 as Chief Mate, second in command, of steam and motor vessels of any gross tons upon oceans. If you ever spent much time with him, you know just how much he loved talking about the Merchant Marine and his trips around the world during his service.
After his service in the Merchant Marine, he owned and operated two service stations along with a dump truck service. He then went into the insurance business, opening his insurance agency, American Hospitalization Insurance Agency. While still in the insurance business, he opened and owned the SOS Oyster Reef Seafood Restaurant, which he enlarged several times. This led him into starting his own Construction business, J. C. Snowden Construction Co., Inc. He was also in the cattle business.
J.C. loved people, and enjoyed having people every year to an all-day cook out event in the cow pasture where oysters on the half shell and seafood were served. The more people, the merrier. Many people would bring their horses to ride and children would enjoy playing in the cool, clear, water in the sandy creek. There was plenty of shade and sunshine. Just move your folding chair to which suited you the best.
He served as a past President of the Woodley Country Club. J.C. enjoyed the game of golf and his many golfing buddies. Frankie, would tell you that he played 360 days a year, often letting her or one of his children ride the golf cart with him, with instructions of course- you were to be very quiet while anywhere near the putting green or where they were teeing off.
He was a past president of the Montgomery Golf Hall of Fame and a past President of the Health Underwriters Association.
J.C. was born in White Hall, AI. His family moved to Brooklyn, AIabama where his father, John Caleb Snowden, was from. He lived in Brooklyn as young child and started his first year in school there. He enjoyed fishing in Bottle Creek and the Sepulga River. When not fishing, he and his friends would swim.
At the age of 13, his family moved to China Grove, AIabama where his mother, Fannie Lou Hooks Snowden was born and raised and later moved a few miles up the road to Pine Level, Alabama where they were living when he joined the Merchant Marine.
J.C. loved nothing more than going back to Brooklyn and especially to the Brooklyn Baptist Church homecoming every year. He was not able to go last year as he was not feeling well and was looking forward to going this year, but God had other plans for him.
We are especially grateful to Dr. Dennis T. Woodling, nurse Angie, and the staff at Internal Medicine Associates. Also, to Dr. Beatrous at Alabama Cancer Care, and Josh, Barbara, Cynthia and Val with Amedisys Hospice of Montgomery. Thank you all for your kindness, help and support.
Much appreciation to our friend, Jeff Maddox, who has been by our side with love and support and will officiate the service Monday, April 22, 2019. Visitation 11:30-12:30 at Leak Memory and graveside service at 1pm at Greenwood Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family request that you do a kind deed for someone.
