James R. Landreth, Lt. Col USAF, retired, passed away on February 17, 2018. He is preceded in death by his parents, Russell and Kathleen Landreth, and brother William Landreth. He is survived by his wife Jane Landreth, son James M. Landreth, daughters Linda Landreth Harris and Mary K. Quinn (Amory), grandchildren, Laura Jane Harris, Kitty Quinn, Amory W. Quinn and Ellery Quinn.
Jim’s love of flying began early in his life, receiving his pilot’s license on his 16th birthday. Upon graduating from the United State Military Academy, West Point he was selected to attend flying school, receiving his fighter pilots wings at Nellis Air Force Base, Las Vegas, Nevada. He continued his 33 year military career as a member of the United States Air Force. Jim’s educational opportunities included attending Purdue University, Lafayette, Indiana, West Point, NY, Cambridge (England), George Washington University (MBA degree), USAF War College and many other USAF education seminars. His USAF career included tours of duty in Colorado Springs ENT; RAF Lakenheath, England; Vietnam, German General Staff College, Hamburg, Germany; Yuma, Arizona; The Citadel; Charleston, SC and 3 tours at Maxwell AFB, retiring as Commandant of the Senior Non Commissioned Officer Academy, Gunter/Maxwell AFB. He received many citations and honors including the Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal, AF Commendation Medal, AF Longevity Service Award with 6 Oak Leaf Cluster’s, National Defense Service Medal with 1 Bronze Service Star, Vietnam Service Medals, AF Outstanding Unit awards with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal.
Jim was a long time and faithful member of the Christian Church, Disciples of Christ. Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 24, 2018 at 11 AM with a visitation at 9:30 at Christian Church, Disciples of Christ, 1705 Taylor Road, Montgomery, Al 36117. A Military Burial will take place at a later date at Alabama National Cemetery, Montevallo, Al.
