Harold B Smith

Harold Bert Smith, long time resident of Montgomery, Alabama, passed away Wednesday, December 18, 2013, after a long and wonderful life. He served in the USAF during World War II, the Korean War, and the War in Vietnam. He later worked at the Veterans Administration (VA) Medical Center in Montgomery and was Chief of the Civilian Classification section at Maxwell AFB. Upon his retirement from Civil Service, he went to work for the Montgomery Association for Retarded Citizens (MARC) and was instrumental in the development of the Milton Road Residence. A Civitan since 1948, Bert was a member of the Prattville Civitan Club and served the Alabama/West Florida District in a number of offices including District Governor. His Civitan efforts included writing the grant that led to the purchase of the first building at the Louise M. Smith Developmental Center. He received the Marvin B. Dinsmore Award in 1996 from the Association for Retarded Citizens (ARC) of Alabama. He was selected as a Senior of Distinction by the Montgomery Area Council on Aging (MACOA). He is preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Elizabeth Wall Smith. He is survived by three daughters, Margaret “Meg” Smith, Ann Smith Carothers (Littleton), and Leisa Smith Johnson (Larry); four grandchildren, Littleton Brooks Carothers III, James Owen Carothers, Margaret Bailey Johnson, and Harper Logan Johnson; and one great grandson, Littleton Brooks Carothers IV. Visitation is scheduled for Monday, Dec. 23rd, 1:00 pm at Leak Memory Chapel. Graveside services will follow in Greenwood Cemetery at 2:00 pm. Honorary pallbearers will be his sons-in-law and grandsons. In lieu of flowers the family request contributions be made to: Civitan International Research Center Foundation, P.O.
