Dorothy Ann Borg was a unique individual described more than once as a force of nature. She had a long and interesting life: Born in Malta, Dorothy grew up on the island that she loved so much. She became a nurse’s aide and ended up marrying the love of her life, Philip, whom she had known since was 13 years old. Dorothy lived through World War II in the most bombed place in Europe, moved from Malta to the United States, raised her 2 children while working 60 hours a week, and eventually traveled around the world with her husband.
Dorothy was a fiery woman with an unforgettable personality to match. She loved cooking, sewing, knitting, and making handmade Easter baskets for her children, grandchildren, great grandchild, friends and neighbors. She was an impeccable dresser: always dressing to the “9s” for a New York party, or an audience with the Pope, or even going to the casino in Monte Carlo.
To say that Dorothy was strong, brave, and fearless is an understatement. She prevailed through every adversity, and every health issue, from various cancers, back surgery, heart surgery, and brain surgery, just to name a few. She also prevailed through every challenge ever put in her path. It was never a matter of if could Dorothy do it but when.
Dorothy’s memory and intellect was unmatched. Up until her last hours she had an incredible memory; she could remember people, places, dates, and times that all the rest of the family had forgotten or couldn’t place. She was always talking about her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchild and was proud of each and everyone of them and their accomplishments.
She was fiercely independent and always lived in her home even after her husband had passed away. She took care of everything herself from cleaning the house to balancing her checkbook, looking over her accounts, and even driving until a few short years ago.
One of Dorothy’s favorite things to do was take boat rides in Lake Martin which reminded her of home on the island of Malta in the Mediterranean.
Dorothy truly was an amazing, strong, independent, funny and smart woman who loved God, her family, and her friends beyond measure. Dorothy would be found watching mass daily on her television when she was unable to drive herself to church the last few years.
Dorothy was loved deeply by her family and there will be a huge void in the hearts of all who knew her. Dorothy is survived by her loving children: son Joseph (Renee) Borg and daughter Shirley (Frank) Penna, her grandchildren Chelly Blanks, Jennifer Penna, and Kimberly Penna, her great-granddaughter Josie Blanks, and many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, family, and friends. Dorothy’s final resting place will be beside her loving husband on the island of Malta. Heaven will never be the same with Dorothy taking charge. We will miss her dearly.
