Charles McGavock (Mac) Porter was born January 20, 1935, to Lillian McGavock and Cheairs Mayes Porter at Vanderbilt University Hospital. He grew up on a farm outside of Columbia, Tennessee. After graduating from Central High School, he attended the University of the South at Sewanee, Tennessee and graduated from Vanderbilt University and Vanderbilt Medical School in 1957.
After postgraduate training at Vanderbilt and Duke University, he served as a staff physician in the Navy at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Annapolis, Maryland. He returned to Vanderbilt for a year, then did a year of training in Cardiology at the University of Virginia, and another year at Vanderbilt before spending two years in Cardiology at the University of Alabama.
He and his family came to Montgomery, Alabama, in 1970, where he served the community practicing medicine. He and Dr. John L. Finklea started Montgomery Cardiovascular Associates where he practiced until his retirement in 2000. He continued to serve in medicine as a volunteer at the Medical Outreach Clinic.
Mac also enjoyed music. He played trombone in the Montgomery Community Band and other musical groups.
Mac was also involved in the community in other ways. He served on the Vestry of the Church of the Holy Comforter as Senior and Junior Warden and he especially enjoyed singing with the choir. He also was a member of the Board of Directors at the YMCA of Greater Montgomery, the Board of Trustees at the University of the South, the Board of Directors at Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Alabama, and the Board of Directors at Holy Cross Episcopal School.
He is survived by his wife Douglass and their three sons Chilton, John, and Cheairs. He is also survived by his brother John Cheairs Porter and his family.

Honorary pallbearers are Richard Cyrus, Joseph Davis, Allen Dennis, Dennis Endicott, John Finklea, Paul B. Moore, Dennis Nabors, Alexander Wilson, and Michael Weinrib.
Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. in the McQueen Room at Church of the Holy Comforter. A memorial service will be held at the Church of the Holy Comforter at 2911 Woodley Rd., Montgomery, AL 36111 on Friday, August 18, 2023, at 11:00 a.m., the Reverend Rosa Lindahl officiating, and a reception shall follow at the Church. Graveside services will be held the following day at St. John’s Cemetery, Maury County, Tennessee at 1:00 p.m., the Reverend Chris Bowhay officiating.
