Carolyn Gilliland Newman

Carolyn Gilliland Newman, age 83, life-long resident of Montgomery, AL, passed away peacefully during a hospital stay on Thursday August 29, 2024. Funeral services will be held at First United Methodist Church, Montgomery, AL at 11:00 am on Wednesday September 4, 2024 with Dr. Jay D. Cooper officiating. Visitation will be held prior to the service in the Fellowship Hall at First United Methodist Church at 10:00 am.

Mrs. Newman was preceded in death by her parents, Lebanon and Hugh Jack Gilliland and her brother Robert L. Gilliland. She is survived by her loving husband, Dr Alfred J. Newman, Jr, her children Mike (Jennifer) Johnson, Terri (Buddy) Waller, Alfred, III (Catherine) Newman, Andrew (Kelly) Newman, grandchildren Emily (Mac) Wingard, Lindsey Johnson, Johnathon Towle, Michael Johnson, Meredith Newman, Lauren Newman, Layla Newman, two great grandchildren, Emmett and Ivy Wingard, her brothers Hugh (Gloria) Gilliland, Tom (Cheryl) Gilliland, and many nieces and nephews.

Carolyn worked in healthcare for three decades managing her husband’s medical practice, Central Alabama Urology. Carolyn also received numerous National Independent Publishing awards for books as publisher at River City Publishing. She long supported the education program at Montgomery Museum of Fine Art.

Pallbearers will be Michael Johnson, Johnathon Towle, Mac Wingard, Vic Griswold, Ira Betts, Louie Vanderlinde. Honorary palbearers include David Gamble, Mike Gamble, Bill McMurtrey, and Ryan Gilliland.
