Calvin Prestage Jr. went to be with the Lord on March 10, 2015, after his long 14 year battle with colon cancer. Calvin was a long time resident of Montgomery, AL and a faithful member of Eastmont Baptist Church since 1974. He is survived by his wife, Martha Janette; Son: Barry Prestage (Stefanie); Daughter: Kristy Prestage Cornette (Scott); Grandchildren: Morgan Prestage, Mason Prestage, Grant Cornette and Carson Cornette; Parents: Kavanaugh and Mae Ola Prestage of Pearl, MS; Sisters: Betty Jean Logan of Brandon, MS, Brenda Prestage of Pearl, MS and brother Danny Prestage, also of Pearl, MS.
Calvin graduated from Pisgah High School in Sandhill, MS in 1966. He went on to become a licensed barber. He was drafted to serve in Vietnam as a Military Police officer in 1968. After returning home, Calvin began a long career in the food service industry. He began by managing the warehouse inventory with A. Joseph Produce Co. in Jackson, MS. He then launched his successful career as a food sales representative in Montgomery, AL for John Sexton & Co. (an Atlanta, GA based company). He continued as a sales representative after a merger of the company with US Food Service. Calvin won numerous sales achievement awards for his exceptional sales quotas and won several trips to highlight and reward him for his long hard work through the years. Calvin worked many years while enduring cancer but was forced to take an early retirement as it began to burden his health more.
Calvin enjoyed talking and getting to know people either through church, work or his journey through cancer. He stayed faithful to Christ throughout his enduring struggle and always took an opportunity to share where his strength was found, in Christ. He always had a smile on his face regardless of the physical pain he was suffering. He loved his family time and enjoyed spending every opportunity he could with his four grandchildren. Calvin always found the good in people and was more than willing to listen to their stories.
Some of the simpler things in life Calvin enjoyed were watching the Andy Griffith Show with his son, daughter and grandkids or enjoying a Saturday afternoon Auburn football game with all of the family. He loved to hear the birds chirping after a rain and took time to appreciate God’s small blessings in life.
Through his 14 year battle, Calvin shared special times and memories with his close friends as they would visit with him at home or in his numerous trips to hospitals. His family truly believes God sent special angels along the way to treat and care for him during his illness. They were a true blessing in ways they will never know. We thank all of the doctors and nurses at UAB in Birmingham, AL and Montgomery Cancer Center in Montgomery, AL for the love and care they showed our father over the many years.
Calvin and Janette shared 47 years of a wonderful, love filled marriage. Janette truly showed her love and commitment of marriage to Calvin by being by his side faithfully in both the good and bad. She fought tirelessly to make sure he received the best of care and was his biggest champion.
Visitation will be held on March 15, 2015 at 1:30 pm at Eastmont Baptist Church, 4505 Atlanta Highway, Montgomery, AL 36109.
