She was preceded in death by her parents, the Reverend Gaston Walter Walton and Annice Mae Wood Walton; two sons, Gene Crump and Randal Ward; two brothers, Paul Walton and Thomas Walton (Ira Sue), and her husband, Joseph C. Ward.
She is survived by one daughter, Melinda McGarry (Ray); three grandchildren, Hart McGarry (Sommer), Stephanie Ward-Schiepek (Franz), and Matthew McGarry; five sisters, Catherine Whitten (Grady), Lena Blair (Paul, deceased), Lou VanHooser (David), Mary Sandlin (Morris), Martha Smith (Ray, deceased); and four great-grandchildren, McKenzie McGarry, Adler McGarry, August McGarry and Anders McGarry.
Amy Walton was born on April 28, 1928 in Columbiana, Alabama. She graduated from Shelby County High School in 1946 before beginning a career in public service, first with the Auburn University Extension Service, then with the State of Alabama as a supervisor in the Welfare Department.
She was a skilled knitter, making beautiful hand crafted treasures for her family and friends, an avid reader, an Alabama history enthusiast, and a lifelong Christian. She was active with Elder Hostel of Mobile County while enjoying retirement with her husband on Dauphin Island, Alabama.
Visitation will be held at Leak Memory Chapel on Sunday, August 14th from 4-6 pm. Graveside service will be Monday, August 15th at 11 am at the Alabama National Cemetery in Montevallo. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Children’s Harbor or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
